Historical Description

The small village of Whittington is of considerable renown, from its having been the place where the Earl of Danby, the Duke of Devonshire, and Sir John Arcy, assembled to concert measures for effecting the Revolution of 1688. "According to the traditions of the county (says a modern writer), the spot appointed for their deliberations was Whittington Moor, at a middle place between Kniveton, Chatsworth, and Ashton ; and that a shower of rain happening to fall, they removed to the village for shelter, and finished their conversation at a public house there, the sign of the Cock and Pynot (The provincial name for a Magpye). The cottage thus distinguished stands at a point where the road from Chesterfield branches off to Sheffield and Rotherham, and has ever since been called the Revolution House. The small apartment within, where the noblemen sat, had the name of the Plotting Chamber; but this appellation being thought opprobrious, has been lately changed to the Revolution Parlour. An ancient chair is preserved here, in which the Duke of Devonshire is believed to have been seated. On the 5th of November 1788, the centenary commemoration of the Revolution was celebrated in this village, and at Chesterfield, with considerable splendour. The descendants of many illustrious families, who were concerned in effecting that memorable event, were present, as well as great numbers of other persons. On the day previous to the jubilee, the committee appointed to conduct the proceedings, dined at the Revolution House; and a considerable sum was afterwards subscribed for defraying the expences of a monumental column, proposed to have been erected on the spot, as a lasting memorial of the measures by which the liberties of the kingdom were so happily preserved. The subscription remained open several months ; but the occurrence of the French revolution, and its consequent horrors, occasioned the erection of the column to be deferred. The late learned antiquary, the Rev. Mr. Pegge, was rector of this parish."

Topography of Great Britain (1829) by George Alexander Cooke

WHITTINGTON is a scattered village with two stations (Sheepbridge and Whittington) on the Midland railway, and with New Whittington, Whittington Moor and part of Sheepbridge form an extensive parish; it is on the river Rother, 2 ½ miles north from Chesterfield, 9 ½ south-east from Sheffield and 159 from London, in the North Eastern division of the county, Scarsdale hundred, Chesterfield union, petty sessional division and county court district, rural deanery of Dronfield, archdeaconry of Derby and diocese of Southwell.

The parish was governed by a Local Board from 1861, but under the provisions of the “Local Government Act, 1894” (56 and 57 Vict. c. 73) it has now an Urban District Council. The village is supplied with water from works at Linacre Wood, the property of the Chesterfield Water Works and Gas Light Company. The church of St. Bartholomew, erected in 1863, near the site of the old church, then removed, was an edifice of stone, consisting of chancel, clerestoried nave of four bays, aisles, south porch and a western tower, with spire, containing 4 bells: but the church (with exception of the tower and spire) was totally destroyed by fire 29 Jan. 1895: affixed to the west wall of the church was a monument of black marble to the antiquary, Dr. Pegge, for 45 years rector of this parish (1751—96), who died February 14th, 1796, in his 92nd year and was buried under the chancel of the old church; a reredos was erected in 1887 by the parishioners in memory of Miss Catherine Aldam, of Whittington Grange. The registers, dating from the year 1620, were for the most part destroyed by the fire. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £215, including 32 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the Bishop of Southwell, and held since 1898 by the Rev. George Ford M.A. of Christ’s College, Cambridge. There is an iron Mission church at Broomhill Park, in connection with St. Bartholomew’s, and a brick Mission church at New Whittington. There is a Primitive Methodist chapel at Old Whittington, built in 1865, with sittings for 160; one at Whittington Moor, and a Free Methodist chapel at Whittington Moor; a Wesleyan chapel in the Gothic style from designs by Mr. F. Blake, architect, of Chesterfield, was erected in 1895, at a cost of £1,400, and affords 175 sittings. Webster’s Charity of £17 15s. 6d. yearly is distributed to six old people of the parish, the sum of £2 19s. 3d. annually being paid to each. Gisborne’s Charity, left in 1818 by the Rev. Francis Gisborne, sometime rector of Staveley, and amounting to £6 12s. 11d. yearly, is distributed in flannel to 55 of the parishioners. In this village still stands the tiny stone cottage known as the “Revolution House,” being the place where, in 1688, William, 4th Earl and 1st Duke of Devonshire K.G.; Sir Thomas (Osborne), 1st Earl of Danby, and afterwards Duke of Leeds, and John D’Arcy esq. met and planned the rising which resulted in the overthrow of King James II. It was then a well-furnished country inn, with the swinging sign of “The Cock and Pynot,” and had a brewhouse, producing the famous Derbyshire ale, and stables, making it a frequent house of call for the people of the country side as well as to pack-horse travellers and merchants. In 1788, the centenary of the Revolution, there were great rejoicings here, and an assemblage of nobility, gentry and yeomen went in procession to the cottage and viewed the historic “plotting parlour” and the chair, now preserved at Hardwick Hall, in which the duke presided over the memorable conference alluded to. The cottage was formerly the property of the Cavendish family, and afterwards of Mr. Mansfeldt Mills, of Tapton, the right being reserved to the Duke of Devonshire, in the event of its demolition, to erect a suitable memorial in its place, who has conveyed it free of cost to a committee called the bi-centenary committee. The trustees of the late W. Parker esq. are lords of the manor and the principal landowners. The area is 1,569 acres of land and 12 of water; rateable value, £19,536; the population of the whole civil parish in 1871 was 5.578; 1881, 7,271 and 1891 was 8,798, and of the ecclesiastical 6,413.

Old Whittington School (mixed), founded &; endowed in 1679 by Peter Webster, rebuilt in 1849 & enlarged in 1871 & 1879, for 293 boys & girls & 150 infants; average attendance, 290 boys & girls & 150 infants; the original endowment has been augmented by the Charity Commissioners & a residence for the master was built in 1874.
