Topography of Great Britain (1829) by George Alexander Cooke

WHITWELL is a considerable agricultural village and parish, on the road from Chesterfield to Worksop, in the extreme north-east of the county, bounded by Yorkshire on the north and Nottinghamshire on the east, with a station on the Mansfield and Worksop branch of the Midland railway, and 11 ¾ miles north-east from Chesterfield, 4 ½ south-west from Worksop and 151 ¼ from London, in the North Eastern division of the county, Scarsdale hundred, Eckington petty sessional division, Worksop union and county court district, rural deanery of Staveley, archdeaconry of Derby and diocese of Southwell. The church of St. Lawrence is a cruciform building of stone, chiefly Norman, and dating from 1150, transepts having been added and the east end altered at a later period in the Decorated style; it consists of chancel, clerestoried nave, aisles, transepts and a Norman tower containing a clock (entirely renewed in 1890 at a cost of £110) and 3 bells: there are two piscinae, one in the chancel and the other in the south transept, and two stone sedilia in the chancel with lofty and richly carved tabernacle work: there is a memorial window to the late rector, placed in 1876, and a monument with recumbent effigy, to Sir Roger Manners knt. erected in 1632: the font is massive and dates probably from about 1490: the church was thoroughly restored in 1886, at a cost of £2,300, given chiefly by the Duke of Portland: there are 500 sittings. The register of baptisms and burials dates from the year 1672, and marriages from 1682. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £500, with 143 acres of glebe and residence, in the gift of the Duke of Portland, and held since 1874 by the Rev. George Edward Mason M.A. of Trinity College, Cambridge, and hon. canon and prebendary of Southwell. The Iron Mission church at Hodthorpe was opened in 1898. The Wesleyan chapel, erected in 1858, has 150 sittings, and there is also a Free Methodist chapel. There are several small charities, which are distributed on St. Thomas’ day. Whit-well Hall, a large and ancient building, was formerly the seat of Sir Roger Manners, who was knighted at Theobalds, Herts, 25 April, 1615, and fell during the Civil War; the house was many years used as the National school. At Steetley, a farm 1 ½ miles north of the village, is an ancient Norman church, partially covered with ivy, restored and reconsecrated on November 2nd, 1880; and consisting of apsidal chancel and nave, divided by a fine arch of three orders, on piers with curiously carved capitals: there are 80 sittings. At Hodthorpe, ½ mile south is an Iron Mission church, seating 100 persons. Whitwell Wood extends over 440 acres. The Duke of Portland P.C., G.C.V.O, is lord of the manor and chief landowner. The soil is limestone and loamy, producing abundant crops of wheat, barley and turnips. The area is 5,224 acres of rich and highly cultivated land, and 7 of water; rateable value, £12,433; the population in 1891 was 1,908.

Creswell is partly in this parish. Hall Leys, Millash, Springfields, Commonside, Firbeck, Green Lane End, Red Hill and Burnt Leys are other places.
