Historical Description

WILLINGTON is a pleasant village and parish, with a station (called Repton and Willington) on the Derby and Burton section of the Midland railway, 4 ½ miles north-east from Burton-upon-Trent, 6 ½ south-west from Derby and 125 ½ from London, in the Southern division of the county, hundred of Morleston and Litchurch, union of Burton-upon-Trent, Derby petty sessional division and county court district, rural deanery of Repton, archdeaconry of Derby and diocese of Southwell. The Grand Trunk Canal and the rivers Dove and Trent pass through the parish. The church of St. Michael is a building of stone, consisting of chancel, nave, north transept and a small embattled western tower with pinnacles, containing 3 bells, recast in 1827, at a cost of £30: the south doorway, now built up, is of Norman date, as was also the chancel arch, recased in 1824; the chancel itself has two short lancet windows of Early English work: the tower, singularly plain, was built in 1824 for £80, and shortly afterwards a north transept was erected and the church repewed, at a cost of £300: in the chancel are some modern brasses of the Spilsbury family (1864—78), and on the nave floor two white grave stones, with defaced inscriptions, one of which is to John Stephenson, gent, sometime organist (1699), and in the chancel is a mural monument to Anne Turpin (1745): the south window is a memorial to John Wilks (1846): the communion plate dates from 1699: there are 220 sittings. The register dates from the year 1680. The living is a discharged vicarage, net yearly value £100, including 75 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of W. Cecil Salt esq. and held since 1890 by the Rev. Thomas George Strong. There are Wesleyan and Baptist chapels here. Gisborne’s Charity, of £5 10s. yearly, left in 1786, is for clothing, and £8 10s. from other sources is distributed in money. Sir Francis Burdett bart. of Foremark Hall, who is lord of the manor, and the Repton and Etwall Corporation (School and Hospital), are the principal landowners. The soil is chiefly light; subsoil, gravel. The chief crops are wheat, barley, clover and turnips. The area is 1,288 acres of land and 38 of water; rateable value, £8,196; the population in 1891 was 596.

National School (mixed), erected in 1871, at a cost of £280, raised by subscription; class rooms being added in 1883 & 1894; it will hold 140 children; average attendance, 110.
