There will be a station on the Bideford, Westward Holl and Appledore railway about half-mile north-west from the village and near the cliffs. The church of St. Helen is an ancient edifice of stone, in the Early English style, restored and reseated in 1870 and consists of chancel, nave, south porch and an embattled western tower, containing 6 bells; the fifth bears the words “Campana Johannis” in beautifully formed and floriated letters, and the tenor, a very fine-toned bell, has the word “lemosinary” repeated nine times, reversed or upside down: there are several stained windows: the ends of the benches are finely carved, and exhibit numerous shields with the emblems of “Our Lord’s Passion,” figures of saints, the Bourchier knot and various initials: there are sittings for 300 persons.
