Historical Description
ALPHINGTON is a parish and village, on the river Exe, and the road from Exeter to Exminster, 1 ¼ miles south from Exeter and 11 north-west from Dawlish, in the North Eastern division of the county, Wonford hundred and petty sessional division, St. Thomas’ union, county court district of Exeter, rural deanery of Kenn and archdeaconry and diocese of Exeter: the South Devon railway and the Exeter ship canal pass through the parish. The church of St. Michael is an ancient building of stone in the Perpendicular style, consisting of chancel, nave, aisles, north porch, and an embattled western tower with turret and pinnacles containing a clock and 8 bells, all cast by T. Bilbie, in 1749, in place of a former peal of 5, by licence of the Bishop: the cylindrical Norman font is carved with intersecting arches and scroll work, and figures: the screen across the tower arch is made up of shields and carving which previously formed part of the old gallery erected in 1625 and demolished in 1875. The porch bears the arms of the Courtenays, and a modern figure of St. Michael trampling on the dragon, presented by the Earl of Devon: the tower was repaired about 1852, the whole church was thoroughly restored in 1878—9, at a cost of £4,067, and the tower and bells in 1897: there are stained windows to various members of the Ellacombe family, Thomas Wordman, Mrs. Griffin, and others: the oak screen, dating from about 1670, was restored at the expense of the Earl of Devon; and the stone pulpit was presented by the Rev. H. J. Ellacombe, rector of Clyst St. George, in 1881: the chancel was decorated and a carved oak Teredos erected in 1900: there are sittings for 400 persons. The register dates from the year 1603. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £440, with residence and 24 acres of glebe, in the gift of Antony Gibbs esq. and held since 1880 by the Rev. Edward John Gore Dupuis M.A. of Exeter College, Oxford. There is also a Wesleyan chapel here. The charities, amounting to about £30 yearly, are distributed in bread and clothing. The Manor House, the property of the Earl of Devon, is occupied by William Martin esq. The Earl of Devon, who is lord of the manor, and Antony Gibbs esq. of Tyntesfield, Somerset, are the principal landowners. The soil is loamy; subsoil, gravel. The crops are the usual cereals, with much pasture. The area is 2,716 acres of land, 20 of water and 2 of tidal water; rateable value, £7,807; the population in 1901 was 1,127.
By Local Government Board Order No. 16,545 (March 25, 1884) Gutteridge house and cottages were transferred from Kenton.
A School Board of 5 members was formed March 31, 1875 Exminster with one member & Shillingford St. Georgs with one member, are contributory parishes; J. Hutchings, Heavitree, clerk to the board & attendance officer.
Board Schools, erected in 1876, for 220 children; average attendance, 210.
