Historical Description
ASHBURY is a parish and village, with a station 2 miles south-west, on the Okehampton and Holsworthy branch of the London and South Western railway, and is 5 south-west from Hatherleigh, in the Western division of the county, Black Torrington East hundred, Hatherleigh petty sessional division, Okehampton union and county court district, rural deanery of Okehampton, archdeaconry of Totnes and diocese of Exeter. The church of St. Mary, beautifully situated in the picturesque park of Ashbury House, is a building of stone in the Early English style, consisting of chancel, nave, south porch and an embattled western tower with pinnacles containing 3 bells. The carved oak reredos, executed by Hems, was placed in 1891, at a cost of £200, by Mrs. Woollcombe as a memorial to her husband, the late Archdeacon Henry Woollcombe. The church was restored in 1872—3 by the late Ven. Archdeacon Henry Woollcombe, at a cost of £900, and has 70 sittings. The register dates from the year 1612. The living is a rectory united with North Lew, joint net yearly value £450, including 189 acres of glebe, in the gift of the Crown, and held since 1885 by the Rev. John Worthington M.A. of Brasenose College, Oxford, and rural dean of Okehampton, who resides at North Lew. The Mid-Devon hotel, situated close to the station, and 820 feet above the set level, contains spacious sitting rooms and bed rooms, and a detached billiard room, and has good stabling. Ashbury House is the property of John Morth Woollcombe esq. The old mansion, occupied by the family since 1685, was destroyed by fire in 1877, and the present house was erected by the late Ven. Archdeacon Woollcombe in 1866. The trustees of the late Ven. Archdeacon Henry Woollcombe are lords of the manor and chief landowners. The soil is sandy; subsoil, stone. The chief crops are wheat, barley and oats. The area is 1,748 acres; rateable value, £742; the population in 1901 was 83.
The telegraph office at the station is open on week days at train times only, and not open on Sundays.
The children of this place attend the school at North Lew.
