Historical Description
ASHCOMBE is a village and parish on the east side of the Great Haldon, 5 miles north-west from Dawlish station on the Exeter and Plymouth section of the main line of the Great Western railway, 9 south-east from Exeter, 3 east from Chudleigh and 5 north-west from Teignmouth, in the North Eastern division of the county, Exminster hundred, Wonford petty sessional division, St. Thomas union, Exeter county court district, rural deanery of Kean and archdeaconry and diocese of Exeter. The church of St. Nectan is a fine old building of stone in the Decorated and Perpendicular styles, consecrated in 1259, and consisting of chancel, nave, north aisle, small transepts, south porch and an embattled western tower containing 3 bells; the 1st, cast in Totnes, is dated 1686; the 2nd has a prayer to the Virgin in Old English characters; the 3rd, a very high-shouldered bell, dates from 1607: the font is Norman and there is a piscina; the seats are of oak with richly-carved ends of curious design; and in the north transept is a memorial window to the Rev. W. H. Palk B.A., J.P. 65 years rector, who died July 28, 1885, erected by his niece, Lady Elizabeth Jones; the nave arcade exhibits the arms of the Kirkham family, who had possessions here in the 16th century: the fine old screen was sold in 1820: in 1824 considerable sums were expended in repairing and beautifying the church, which has 140 sittings: the entrance to the neatly-kept churchyard is through a lych-gate. The register dates from the year 1583, but the early records are much dilapidated. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £171, including 33 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the Lord Chancellor, and held since 1865 by the Rev. Walter Moyle M.A. of Worcester College, Oxford. Langley's charity produces £3 7s. 8d. yearly, which is devoted to the National school. Sir Robert Hunt Stapylton Dudley Lydston Newman bart. of Mamhead Park, is lord of the manor and chief landowner. The soil is loamy; the subsoil is limestone rock and sandstone rock. The chief crops are wheat, barley, oats and turnips; apples are also largely grown here. The acreage is 1,968; rateable value, £1,775; the population in 1901 was 125.
Middle Ashcombe and Lower Ashcombe are about a mile east from Ashoombe.
