Historical Description

ASHWATER is a parish and village on the river Carey, half a mile north-west from Ashwaler station on a section of the London and South Western railway from Exeter to Launceston and Tresmeer, and 7 miles south-east from Holsworthy; Dunsland Cross station is in this parish, 5 miles north of the village; in the Western division of the county, hundred of Black Torrington, Holsworthy petty sessional division, union and county court district, rural deanery of Holsworthy, archdeaconry of Barnstaple and diocese of Exeter. The church of St. Peter consists of chancel, nave, south aisle, north porch and a lofty western tower, with pinnacles, containing 5 bells, all cast in 1772, and repaired in 1865 by the late F. Honey: in the south aisle are recumbent effigies of a knight in plate armour and a lady, probably representing Sir Hugh Courtenay, of Boconnoc, Cornwall, slain at Tewkesbury, 4 May, 1471, and Margaret (Carminow) his wife: in the east window of the aisle are the arms of Carew impaling Carminow; and a shield on one of the bench ends exhibits a biretta and a monogram, possibly referring to the Arscott family: the stained east window is a memorial to the wife and daughter of the Rev. Thomas Melhuish M.A. late rector: in 1876 the church was restored at a cost of £1,200; in 1889 it was further restored, when the chancel was rebuilt, new-roofed with oak and re-floored and carved oak choir stalls and other fittings erected: a fine carved oak pulpit, executed by John Northcott, of this parish, was also presented by the rector: there are 300 sittings. The register dates from the year 1558, and records the baptism here of the father of General Monk, afterwards Duke of Albemarle, and also the marriage of his grandfather to a Miss Arscott. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £4718, including 94 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of, and held since 1897, by the Rev. George Douglas Melhuish M.A. of Exeter College, Oxford. There are two Bible Christian chapels and a Baptist chapel. Robert J. Preston-Whyte esq. of Leigh House, Chulmleigh, who is lord of the manor, Mrs. Dickinson, of Dunsland, Brandis Corner, and Mrs. Ford, of 17 Park Street, Park Lane, London W. are the principal landowners. The soil is chiefly clay; subsoil, clay. The chief crops are wheat, barley and oats. Acreage, 8,710; rateable value, £3,292; the population in 1901 was 758.
