Historical Description

AVETON GIFFORD is a parish and village, pleasantly situated near the liver Avon, here crossed by a county bridge, 3 miles south-west from Loddiswell station on the Kingsbridge branch of the Great Western railway, 3 ½ north-west from Kingsbridge, 3 ½ south-east from Modbury and 16 east-by-south from Plymouth, in the Totnes division of the county, hundred of Ermington, petty sessional division of Ermington and Plympton, union and county court district of Kingsbridge, rural deanery of Woodleigh, archdeaconry of Totnes and diocese of Exeter. The church of St. Andrew is an ancient edifice of stone in the Early English and Decorated styles, situated on an eminence a short distance from the village, and consists of chancel with aisles, nave, transepts and a central tower containing 8 bells; the interior was thoroughly restored in 1869, at a cost of about £2,500, of which £500 was a legacy left by the late Miss Froude, of Denbury: the east window is a memorial to the Rev. W. P. Pitman, late rector: the stained west window was given in 1887 by the Rev. W. D. Pitman M.A. rector: the organ was built in 1875: the fine 15th century chancel screens of carved oak, removed in 1869, were restored in 1886 by Hems of Exeter and replaced: there are 450 sittings. The register dates from the year 1614 (baptism), 1603 (marriages and deaths). The living is a rectory, net yearly value £460, with 97 acres of glebe, and residence, in the gift of and held since 1874 by the Rev. Wm. Daniel Pitman M.A. of Exeter College, Oxford, and J.P. Walter de Stapledon, a native of Monkleigh, in this county, and some time rector of Aveton Gifford, was consecrated Bishop of Exeter in 1307, and in 1314 was the founder of Exeter College, Oxford; he was also Professor of Canon Law at that University, chaplain to Pope Clement V. and for several years Lord High Treasurer, but was beheaded by the adherents of Queen Isabella, 15th Oct. 1326. There are Baptist, Bible Christian and Wesleyan chapels. The late Archdeacon Froude, father of Professor J. A. Froude M.A. (d. 1894), the distinguished historian, was born at Wakeham House, in. this: parish. The church property, amounting to £16 annually, is used for expenses connected with the church. Mrs. Lucy Wilcox, of Greenham, Berks, a native of this parish, left in 1875 the sum of £500, the interest thereof to be distributed in provisions on Christmas Eve, by the churchwardens and overseers, amongst the poor of the parish not being inmates of the Union Workhouse. A market and two fairs, now obsolete, were granted to the lord of the manor in 1287. Baldwin John Pollexfen Bastard esq. of Kitley, is lord of the manor, and the Rev. Philip Hyne, of Woodside, Luton, Beds, lord of the smaller manor of Heathfield. The principal landowners are R. H. Froude esq. Henry Mallet Veale esq. of Passaford, Hatherleigh, James Adams esq. the trustees of the late T. Emerson, Mrs. Pearce, Admiral George Parker, of Delamore, Ivybridge, Mr. Edward Garland, Mr. J. Yabsley, the Rev. P. Hyne and Mrs. Wright. The chief crops are wheat, barley, oats and roots; the farms are well adapted for rearing stock and for dairy produce. The area is 3,946 acres of land, 2 of water, 23 of tidal water and 70 of foreshore; rateable value, £4,946; the population in 1891 was 796.

National School (mixed), erected with residence for the master in 1857, for 196 scholars; average attendance, 72 mixed & 28 infants.
