Historical Description
AWLISCOMBE is a parish and village, on the road from Honiton to Cullompton, 2 miles north-west from Honiton station on the main line of the South Western railway and 16 north-east from Exeter, in the Eastern division of the county, Hemyock hundred, Honiton petty sessional division, union and county court district, rural deanery of Dunkeswell and Honiton, and archdeaconry and diocese of Exeter. The church of St. Michael is an edifice of stone, in the Perpendicular style of the 15th century, consisting of chancel with aisle, nave of four bays, north aisle, south transept, south porch with groined stone roof, and an embattled western tower containing a clock and 5 bells; a traceried stone screen with figures of angels divides the chancel from the nave; the south porch was erected by Thomas Chard, last abbot of Ford and suffragan bishop in the diocese of Exeter, who also founded a chantry in the south aisle: there is a memorial window to Richard Marsden esq. of Manchester, erected by his wife and family in 1863; and two others of considerable merit: the church was repaired in 1838 and restored in 1887 at a cost of £1,000, under the direction of Mr. F. Hedley Fulford F.R.I.B.A.: the chancel has been decorated from designs by Mr. Palfrey, of London, and in 1891 new windows were inserted, principally at the cost of George Neumann esq. and his family: there are 320 sittings. The churchyard has recently been enlarged, and the new ground was consecrated by the Bishop of Exeter, 11th Oct. 1890. The register dates from the year 1559. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £182, including 30 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the Duke of Bedford, and held since 1895 by the Rev. Walter Harry Tribe M.A. of Wadham College, Oxford. There is a Baptist chapel about a mile from the village, built in 1869, and seating about 130 persons. Shipley Close, a field in the parish of Honiton, is let for the benefit of the poor of this parish and Budleigh Salterton: the rent is devoted to the purchase of calico, which is distributed on. Easter Sunday to such agricultural labourers as have brought up their families without parochial aid. Hembury Fort, on the road from this place to Honiton, and supposed by some to be the “Moridunum” of Antoninus, is an ancient camp on an elevated site and affording extensive views; the camp covers an area of about acre, enclosed by triple lines of earthworks and divided by other ramparts crossing it. Thomas Chard, abbot of Ford, was born at Tracey in this parish about 1470. Tracey, a fine old residence, beautifully seated, is occupied by Mrs. Weldon. Ashfield is the residence of Lt.-Col. William John Mackintosh (late Royal Artillery) Egland is the residence of the Rev. Walter Harry Tribe M.A. vicar. The land is freehold. The principal landowners are Mrs. Weldon, of Tracey, Mrs. Drewe, Marwood Notley esq. the trustees of the Calwoodley charity, Exeter, Rev. Daniel James Pring M.A. of Wookey, Somerset, the Rev. the Hon. Graham Colbome M.A. rector of Dittisham and Messrs. Robert White and Robert Bishop. The soil is clayey; subsoil, marl. The chief crops are oats, peas, beans, roots and pasturage. The area is 2,487 acres; rateable value, £3,332; the population, in 1901 was 465. By Local Government Board Order 16,349 detached parts of the parish were transferred to Buckerell and Gittisham and a part of Buckerell added to Awliscombe, Mar. 24, 1884.
Part of Weston is 1 ¼ miles south from the parish church; the remaining portion is in Buckerell.
National School (mixed), built in 1874, for 100 children; average attendance, 81.
