Historical Description

AYLESBEARE is a village and parish, 4 miles south from Whimple station and 4 south-east from Broadclyst station, both on the main line of the London and South Western railway; 7 east from Exeter, 9 south-west from Honiton and about 7 north-west from Sidmouth, in the Eastern division of the county, East Budleigh hundred, Ottery petty sessional division, union of St. Thomas, Exeter county court district, rural deanery of Aylesbeare, and archdeaconry and diocese of Exeter. The church of the Blessed Virgin Mary is an ancient fabric of stone in the Pointed style, consisting of chancel, nave, north aisle, south porch and an embattled western tower, with turret, containing 3 bells; there are monuments of the Marker, Stokes and Walker families, and a fine old carved font: the church was restored in 1899 at a cost of nearly £1,000, when a small organ was provided and an oak screen erected: there are 150 sittings. A lych-gate was erected in 1872. The register dates from the year 1580. The living is a discharged vicarage, net yearly income £157, with residence and 9 acres of glebe, in the gift of F. Burrow esq. and held since 1893 by the Rev. Ernest Bartholomew Brutton M.A. of Jesus College, Cambridge. The Hon. Mark George Kerr Rolle is lord of the manor and principal landowner; Mrs. Elliott, of Westcott House, Rockbeare, Mrs. Johnson, of Chelsea, and Messrs. A. T. and T. E. Loram are also landowners. The soil is clay and marl on western portion of parish, light and gravel on east; subsoil, marl. A large proportion of land on the west side of the township is pasture; to the east, light arable. The area is 2,899 acres; rateable value, £2,481; the population in 1901 was 235.

By a Local Government Board Order (16,545) which came into operation March 25, 1884, a detached part of Woodbury, known as Great and Little Houndbeare, was amalgamated with this parish.

A School Board of 7 members was formed June 14, 1875, for Aylesbeare, Newton Poppleford, Harpford & Venn Ottery united district; Holloway Hartley, Ottery St. Mary, clerk to the board; George Taylor, attendance officer.

Board School (mixed), an old building transformed to its present use in 1875, to hold 80 children; average attendance, 40; a new school was erected in 1890.
