Petton History
Petton, 4 miles east from the town, is a very ancient chapelry in this parish. The chapel, rebuilt in 1848, is a plain building of stone, in the Early English style, consisting of apsidal chancel, nave and a western bell gable, containing two bells. The living is a perpetual curacy, net yearly value £50, in the gift of the vicar of Bampton, and held since 1867 by the Rev. William Harpley M.A. of St. John’s College, Cambridge, and rector of Clayhanger. Here is also a small Bible Christians’ mission room.
