At these callings objections could be made to a marriage. They record the bride and groom's parish of residence, which may be recorded differently in the marriage register.

Civil & Ecclesiastical Jurisdiction
Historical Description
Beer is a small place, lying between very steep hills, about a mile from Seaton. It possesses a freestone quarry, from which many of its houses are built. The cove has very deep water, and from its situation, is capable of forming a very secure harbour. Great quantities of fish are caught and brought in here, but much the larger portion of them is sent off by contract, to the markets of Bath and Taunton, and some even to London.
Bovey, a very ancient seat in this parish, was the inheritance of the Walronds of Bradfield, near Collumpton; it is a very old, irregular building of freestone, and is now the property of Lady Rolle, the only surviving daughter of the late William Walrond, Esq.
The parish-church is dedicated to St. Gregory. It is an ancient free-stone building, with a slated roof, and a low tower, containing four bells. In this parish there is a Dissenting chapel. On an eminence called South Down, is a most delightful and extensive prospect, by sea, from Portland to the Start Point, and by land, of a great part of the counties of Devon, Dorset, and Somerset.
BEER is a large fishing hamlet, and was formerly a tithing in Seaton civil parish, but under the provisions of sec. 36 of the “Local Government Act, 1894” (56 and 57 Vict. c. 73), it was in November, 1894, formed into a civil parish. It is beautifully seated in a deep narrow glen on a small creek communicating with the sea, and is about 1 ½ miles south-west from Seaton station on the London and South Western railway, 5 ½ south-west from Axminster, and 8 south from Honiton, in the Eastern division of the county, Colyton hundred, Axminster petty sessional division, union and county court district, rural deanery of Dunkeswell and Honiton, and archdeaconry and diocese of Exeter. The church of St. Michael was erected in 1877—78 by the Hon. Mark G. Kerr Rolle, at a cost of about £8,000, to serve as a chapel of ease to the mother church at Seaton, and is a building of freestone obtained from the neighbouring quarries, in the Decorated style, consisting of chancel, clerestoried nave, transepts, aisles, western narthex porch and a tower with short spire, containing a clock and one bell; in the chapel is a memorial to the Starr family: the stained east window was presented by the Hon. M. G. K. Rolle, and there is another erected by the members of a guild: the organ was built in 1885 at a cost of £500. The Rev. Henry Gibbon M.A. of Durham University has been curate in charge since 1897. Here is a Congregational chapel, erected in 1700, and rebuilt and enlarged in 1880, and one for the Brethren. The Cemetery, opened in 1866, consists of about a quarter of an acre, given by the Hon. M. G. Kerr Rolle: it contains a small mortuary chapel of stone with a bell-cote. Beer is celebrated for the manufacture of Honiton lace, and here Queen Victoria’s wedding dress was made in 1839: there are large quarries of freestone which employ about twelve hands. The Hon. Mark G. Kerr Rolle is lord of the manor and principal landowner. The area is 1,583 acres; rateable value, £3,402; the population in 1897 was 1,046.
