Historical Description

The church at Berry-Pomeroy was built by one of the family, and contains an elaborate alabaster monument to the memory of Lord Edmund Seymour, Knt. son to the Duke of Somerset; and the lady Elizabeth, wife to the latter, and daughter of Sir Arthur Champernoune. Their effigies are represented lying on three steps, in very constrained positions. The knight and his son are in armour; the former has a truncheon in his left hand, and lies cross-legged, like the Knights Templars. The lady is in a black dress: near her head is the figure of a child in a cradle; at her feet, another in a grotesque chair, with a fine cap on: below are nine figures, (five male and four female) kneeling with books open before them. This monument was repaired, by order of the late Duke of Somerset, in the year 1771. This nobleman was the eighth, in lineal descent, from Somerset the Protector, in the reign of Edward VI.

Topography of Great Britain (1829) by George Alexander Cooke

BERRY POMEROY is a parish and village on the east bank of the river Dart, 2 miles east from Totnes station on the South Devon section of the main line of the Great Western railway and 7 south-west from Torquay, in the Southern division of the county, hundred of Hay-tor, petty sessional division of Stanborough and Coleridge, union and county court district of Totnes, rural deanery and archdeaconry of Totnes and diocese of Exeter. Bridgetown, a hamlet 1 mile west, is included in the borough of Totnes and connected with it by a stone bridge of three arches. The church of St. Mary, built by the Pomeroys, is an ancient edifice of stone, chiefly in the Perpendicular style, but with remains of Early English and Decorated work, consisting of chancel, nave, aisles, south porch and an embattled western tower containing 6 bells, four dated respectively 1635, 1829, 1750 and 1607, and the other two (1897) recently added, when the remainder were re-hung: in the north wall of the chancel is an altar tomb under a groined and canopied arch; the sides are panelled in quatrefoils, some of which have shields displaying the emblems of the Crucifixion; at the back of the arch are matrices of 4 kneeling effigies, 4 children and 4 shields, and two other carved shields of Pomeroy and Pomeroy impaling Denzell: this tomb commemorates Sir Richard Pomeroy kt. ob. 1501, and Elizabeth (Denzell), his wife: the east window of this aisle exhibits the arms of Pomeroy, Raleigh and Beaumont, and there is a memorial window to P. Bennitt esq.: in the north aisle is a monument in the Elizabethan style, to Sir Edward Seymour bart. grandson of the Protector Somerset, ob. 11 Ap. 1613, his wife, Elizabeth (Champernowne), and eleven children: in the chancel is a memorial tablet to the Rev. John Prince, author of “The Worthies of Devon” and 42 years vicar of this parish, who died in 1723, and on the floor of the nave is a brass inscription to Henry Dypforde, ob. 14 Oct. 1590, and Elizabeth, his wife: the foliaged capitals of the piers on the north side incorporate scrolls bearing the names of 7 persons and their wives who contributed to the rebuilding of this part of the church: the church also retains a fine oak screen, 46 feet in length and groined on both sides; it is of ten bays, with the original paintings and three doorways, but the doors are missing; there are also two parcloses, with traces of colour: the south porch is groined and the bosses have the Pomeroy arms: in 1879 the interior was thoroughly restored at a cost of about £3,000 and again in 1900 at a cost of £120 and has 200 sittings. The register dates from the year 1600. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £250, with residence and 2 acres of glebe, in the gift of the Duke of Somerset, and held since 1896 by the Rev. Henry Stewart Prinsep M.A. of Oriel College, Oxford. About a mile north-east of the parish church, standing on an eminence above a tributary of the Hems and densely surrounded with woods, are the ruins of the ancient castle of the Pomeroys, originally erected, it is said, by Ralph de la Pomeroy, who received this manor at the Conquest; the principal portion of the existing ruins formed part of a splendid mansion begun by the Protector Somerset, who became possessor of the estate on the confiscation of the property of Sir Thomas Pomeroy in 1549; the buildings formed the north and east sides of a quadrangle (the west side never having been completed), and were erected at a cost of £20,000; the rooms were numerous and splendid, and the dining-room, in particular, was adorned with figures in alabaster and a magnificent chimney-piece of marble, elaborately wrought; the principal portion of interest is the gatehouse, which bears the arms of the Pomeroys, and some towers connected with it; but the whole structure is now thickly overgrown with ivy, and lofty trees have arisen within it. Bound’s charity of £70 a year is for distribution to the poor. Weston House is the residence of Arthur Williams esq. Berry House of Charles Barran esq. J.P. and Pomeroy Lodge of Mrs. Bennitt. The Duke of Somerset is lord of the manor and the principal landowner, and impropriator of the great tithes, commuted at £400 a year. The soil is various; the chief crops are wheat, barley and roots. The area is 4,287 acres of land, 50 of tidal water and 22 of foreshore; rateable value, £3,718; the population in 1891 was 1,073, but of this number 639 were added to Totnes civil parish in 1894.

Under the provisions of section 36 of the “Local Government Act, 1894” (56 and 57 Vict. 0. 73), Bridgetown, being that part of Berry Pomeroy civil parish included in Totnes municipal borough, has been added to that civil parish.

Parochial School (mixed), built in 1874, for 90 children; average attendance, 50.
