Historical Description

BICKLEIGH (near Plymouth) is a parish and village, with a station on the Great Western railway and is 227 miles from London and 5 ½ north-east from Plymonth, in the Western division of the county, Roborough hundred and petty sessional division, Plympton St. Mary union, East Stonehouse county court district, rural deanery of Plympton, archdeaconry of Totnes and diocese of Exeter. The church of St. Mary the Virgin, formerly belonging to Buckland Abbey, is an edifice in the Perpendicular style, consisting of chancel, nave of four bays, aisles, south porch and an embattled western tower, with four crenellated pinnacles enriched with crockets and finials, containing a clock and 6 bells, all cast by the Penningtons in 1765, except the 1st, dated 1838, and the 3rd, dated 1844, both by Pannell, of Cullompton: on the south side are the remains of a monument to the Slanning family, including an inscription to Gamaliel Slanning, killed, as the legend records, in a duel by Sir John Fitze, of Fitzford, in 1599; above is a quartered shield of arms, and the helmet and gauntlet of Sir Nicholas Slanning kt. a devoted royalist, recorder of Plumpton, and sometime M.P. for Plumpton and Penrhyn, who was slain at the siege of Bristol, 26th July, 1643: in the church is a memorial to Elizabeth, his daughter, relict of Sir James Modyford, bart. d. 1724: the stained east window contains the royal arms, those of the see impaling the coat of the late Bishop Philpotts, and the shield of Lopes; other parts of the church exhibit the arms of Modyford and Dean, representing the marriage of Mary, daughter of Sir James Modyford bart. to whom there is an inscription in the church; she died 1734: there are several finely-wrought marble monuments of the Lopes family, including one, with arms, to Charlotte (Yeates), wife of Sir Manasseh Massey Lopes bart. d. 1833: the church was rebuilt in 1838 by Sir Ralph Lopes bart. from the designs of Mr. J. Fowler, architect, of London, carried out under the direction of Mr. J. D. Sedding, architect, of London, and the cost of the alterations in 1882, amounting to £1,000, was defrayed by his son, the Right Hon. Sir Massey Lopes bart. P.C., M.A.: the chancel has been rearranged, a marble pavement and oak stalls added, and the nave provided with oak benches, the ends of which are panelled and carved in accordance with local types. The register of baptisms and burials dates from the year 1694; marriages, 1695. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £168, with residence and 32 acres of glebe land, in the gift of the Right Hon. Sir Massey Lopes bart. P.C. and held since 1895 by the Rev. Richard Turner M.A. of New College, Oxford. Elizabeth (Slanning), wife of Sir James Modyford bart. by will dated 17th March, 1718, gave to the vicar, churchwardens and overseers a sum of £50, the interest to be distributed in bread every Sunday to poor persons not in receipt of parochial relief. John Herring, in 1778, gave £10 for a similar purpose, and these two benefactions are now consolidated and bestowed as directed by the donors. There are almshouses, erected in 1873 and endowed by the Right Hon. Sir Massey Lopes bart. in memory of Bertha, his wife, only daughter of John, 1st Baron Churston, who died 13th Jan. 1872. On the village green stands an ancient cross, which has been restored. The manor was held from the 16th century by the Slannings, the co-heirs of which family sold the property in 1798 to Manasseh Lopes esq. M.P. The Right Hon. Sir Massey Lopes bart. P.C. is lord of the manor and landowner. The soil is sand; subsoil, clay. The chief crops are wheat, barley and green crops. The area; is 2,359 acres of land and 11 of water; rateable value, £3,963; the population in 1901 was 296.

National School (mixed), built in 1862 by the Right Hon. Sir Massey Lopes bart. in memory of his father Sir Ralph Lopes bart. for 60 children; average attendance, 46.

Petty Sessions are held at the Court house the second Wednesday in the month at 11 a.m..; in September there is an additional court; in October none. The following places are included in the petty sessional division:-Bickleigh, Buckland Monachorum, Egg Buckland, Meavy, St. Budeaux, Shaugh, Sheepstor, Tamerton Foliot, Walkhampton & Weston Peverel.
