Historical Description

BISHOPSNYMPTON is a parish and village near the road from Tiverton and South Molton to Barnstaple, 2 ½ miles south of Bishopsnympton and Molland station, on the Taunton and Barnstaple branch of the Great Western railway, and is 3 miles south-east from South Molton, about 15 west from Tiverton and 193 from London, in the Northern division of the county, Witheridge hundred, South Molton petty sessional division, union and county court district, rural deanery of South Molton, archdeaconry of Barnstaple and diocese of Exeter. The church of St. Mary is an ancient building of mixed styles, consisting of chancel, nave, south aisle, south porch and an embattled western tower, with pinnacles, containing a dock and 6 bells, restored in 1883 at a cost of £100: on the south side of the tower is a canopied niche containing a figure; the east window is stained, and there is a memorial to the Rev. Canon Heberden: the font is Norman and has a square basin placed on a circular shaft, with others at the angles: on the north side of the chancel is an altar tomb, with quatrefoiled sides, but without any figure or inscription, probably erected to Sir Lewis Pollard kt. born about 1465, King’s Sergeant in 1507 and subsequently a Justice of the Common Pleas; he died in 1540: the church was entirely restored in 1869 at a cost of £1,500, and in 1877 £1,090 was expended on various improvements: in 1889 a stained window was erected to the late W. Keates esq. to whose memory a stone pulpit was also placed in the church at the same time by his tenants and friends at a cost of £80: in 1895 an organ chamber was built, and the organ was completely renovated at a cost of £200 in commemoration of the 60th year of the reign of Her late Majesty Queen Victoria, a new clock was placed in the tower, 1897, by subscriptions amounting to £125: there are 350 sittings. The register dates from the year 1556. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £239, with residence and 8 acres of glebe, in the gift of the Bishop of Exeter, and held since 1882 by the Rev. Edward Augustus Lester M.A. of Trinity College, Dublin. The great tithes, value £421, are held by the Ecclesiastical Commissioners. The vicarage house was built at the cost of a former vicar in 1838. Here is a Wesleyan chapel, and one for Bible Christians, built in 1892. There are charities of about £20 yearly value. A cattle fair is held on Whit Monday and on the Wednesday before 25th October. “Whitechapple,” an old house in the Elizabethan style, formerly belonging to the Basset family, but now the property of Miss Isabella Sanger, of Taunton, is occupied as a farmhouse. Another farmhouse, called the “Parsonage,” was once occupied by the rector of the parish. Joseph Andrew Keates esq. of Torquay, who is lord of the manor. Sir William Wollaston Karslake K.C. of 8 Curzon street, London W. Sir Nicholas William George Throckmorton bart. of Buckland, Berks, Mr. Richard Crang, Mr. William Ayre, Mrs. Crosse, of South Molton, the Rev. W. Veysey and Miss Isabella Sanger are the chief landowners. The soil is variable stiff clay; subsoil, skillett, slate. The chief crops are wheat, oats and barley. The area is 9,589 acres of land and 34 of water; rateable value, £7,351; the population in 1901 was 893.
