Historical Description

One mile and a half to the west of Teignmouth is Bishop’s Teignton, a small parish, remarkable for the many roads that intersect it, extending, upon a moderate computation, between 40 and 50 miles, though the circumference of the parish is not more than 12 miles. The church is an ancient structure, apparently of Saxon architecture.

Topography of Great Britain (1829) by George Alexander Cooke

BISHOPSTEIGNTON is a large village and parish on the southern slope of a hill on the north side of the Teign valley and commanding extensive views of the river Teign, 2 miles west from Teignmouth, where the nearest railway station is, 4 east-north-east from Newton Abbot and about 11 south from Exeter, in the Mid division of the county, Exminster hundred, Teignbridge petty sessional division, Newton Abbot union, Newton Abbot and Torquay county court district, rural deanery of Kenn and archdeaconry and diocese of Exeter. The church of St. John the Baptist is a building of stone in the Norman and Perpendicular styles, consisting of chancel, nave of five bays, north aisle and an embattled tower at the west end of north aisle, with 8 crocketed pinnacles, containing a clock and 6 bells re-hung in 1900: the western doorway is a fine example of Norman work: there are eleven stained windows, and monuments to Sir Peter Lear bart, ob. 1682, and Sir Thomas Lear bart. ob. Dec. 1705, and to William Martyn, of Lyndridge, ob. 1640, as well as several tablets: on the outside of the south wall are figures, supposed to represent the “Adoration of the Magi.” The register dates from the year 1540. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £126, including 8 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the Rev. Pelham R. Ogle M.A. vicar of Mackworth, Derby, and held since 1886 by the Rev. Arthur Joseph Saville Ogle B.A. of St. John’s College, Oxford, who is also vicar of Luton. There is a Wesleyan Methodist chapel here, another for Plymouth Brethren and a Baptist chapel at Radway, with sittings for 150 persons. The hydropathic establishment of Mr. C. F. Carpenter is pleasantly situated at the foot of Haldon hill, and is well suited for invalids; services are held on Sundays in the hall at 3 p.m. Coleman’s charity, left in 1719 for the free education of 20 poor children, now produces £52 yearly. Broad Meadow charity, producing £g yearly, is given to such poor as are not in receipt of parish relief. There are almshouses for seven inmates, with an endowment of £10 yearly, left by the late Mrs. Rhodes. In the parish are some remains of the ancient palace of the Bishops of Exeter, considerably enlarged by John de Grandison, bishop 1328—70. Lyndridge, the seat in the 17th century and later of the Lear family, is now the property and residence of Captain John George Edmund Templer J.P. late Highland Light Infantry: the house is a handsome edifice of stone, standing in a park of 145 acres, approached from Chudleigh by a fine double avenue of lofty elms and from Newton by a beautiful and finely varied drive through a romantic wood of a mile in extent.

Bishopsteignton House is the residence of James Broad Bissell esq. J.P. and Long Marston of Lieut.-Col. Fredk. Cooper Tombs. The Rev. George Yonge Comyns B.A. of Wood, who is lord of the manor, and Captain J. G. E. Templer are the chief landowners. The soil is chiefly limestone; the subsoil is gravel and clay. The chief crops are wheat, barley and oats. The area is 4,446 acres of land, 3 of water, 12 of tidal water and 212 of foreshore; rateable value, £9,383; the population in 1901 was 1,076.

Schools: —

National (mixed), originally built about 1730, out of the funds of Coleman’s charity, from which it is endowed with £52 yearly, for the education of 20 poor children; it was rebuilt in 1850& enlarged in 1876 for 140 children; average attendance, 132.
