Luton History
LUTON is a hamlet, and was formed into an ecclesiastical parish Feb. 6, 1866, from Bishopsteignton; it is about 2 ½ miles north-north-east from that place. The church of St. John the Evangelist, erected in 1865, is an edifice of stone, consisting of chancel, nave, south porch and a western turret containing one bell: the eastern windows are stained, and there are 100 sittings: the entrance to the churchyard is through a lych gate. The register dates from the year 1865. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £90, in the gift of and held since 1886 by the vicar of Bishopsteignton. Lord Clifford of Chudleigh is lord of the manor. The population in 1891 was 193.
