Historical Description

BLACK TORRINGTON is a village and parish, bounded on the north by the river Torridge, 4 ½ miles north-east from Halwill and Beaworthy station on the Okehampton and Holsworthy branch of the London and South Western railway, and 6 west-by-north from Hatherleigh, in the Western division of the county, hundred of Black Torrington, petty sessional division, union and county court district of Holsworthy, rural deanery of Holsworthy, archdeaconry of Barnstaple and diocese of Exeter. The church of St. Mary is an edifice of stone, in the Late Perpendicular style of the 16th and Early 17th centuries, consisting of chancel, nave, south aisle and a fine embattled western tower with pinnacles, containing a clock, which chimes the quarters, and 6 bells, cast in 1772, the weight of the tenor being 11 cwt.; the 4th and 6th were re-cast by Mears, of London, in 1826, and the Test by John Pennington and Co. in 1772: there is a memorial window in the chancel to the Coham family, one dated 1875 in the south aisle to Mrs. Penleaze, and others, including one to the Rev. John Penleaze, a former rector, placed in 1880: there is a mural monument of stone to John Parsons, of Beara, in this parish, ob. 1675: the pulpit is of oak, with a sounding board: the church affords sittings for 500 persons. The register dates from the year 1543. The living is a rectory, yearly value £331, including 191 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of and held since 1883 by the Rev. John Samuel Jephson Gardiner M.A. of Trinity College, Dublin. The Bible Christian chapel here, erected in 1843 and enlarged in 1865, was restored in 1885 at a cost of £160, and will seat 200 people: there is another at West Chilla, ejected in 1893, and seating 114. Speccott’s charity consists of a small estate in the parish, five-ninths of the rents of which are given to the poor of Holsworthy and four-ninths to the poor of this parish. There is also a church lands charity, which brings in about £40 yearly. The old mansion was ruinous in 1822. Coham, since 1547 the property of the ancient family of Coham, is now the property of J. Blyth Coham-Fleming esq. D.L. J.P.; it was rebuilt by W. H. B. Coham esq. and is encompassed by fertile pastures and rich woodland. Beara Court, about a mile from the church, the property and residence of Lucius Hurlock Reichel esq. is an ancient Elizabethan building, in part recently rebuilt of granite, surrounded by oak trees and fine yews and commanding extensive views of the country. Braundsworthy, formerly the property of Mr. George Braund, now belongs to Mr. Marshall Eyles. Whiteleigh, partly in this parish and partly in that of Halwill, belonged to the Woollcombes, of Ashbury, but now to W. J. Harris esq. J.P. of Halwill manor. Lana Forda, West Chila and East and West Graddon are the property of the trustees of the late Miss Clarke, of Macclesfield; Addlehole and Ley belong to George Leach esq. A court leet and court baron are held yearly. The manor formerly belonged to the Zouch family, from whom it passed to various families, all of whom resided at Totleigh. The trustees of the late Miss Clarke, of Park House, Macclesfield, Cheshire, who are lords of the manor, J. B. Coham-Fleming esq. William James Harris esq. of Halwill Manor, L. H. Reichel esq. Edwin and James Risdon, James Sparke and the rector are the principal landowners. The soil is clay; subsoil, stone. The chief crops are wheat, oats and roots. The area is 5,681 acres of land and 13 of water; rateable value, £2,490; the population in 1901 was 512.
