Historical Description

BLACKAWTON is a parish and village, 6 ½ miles west from Kingswear station on the Dartmouth branch of the Great Western railway, 9 south from Totnes and 6 west from Dartmouth, in the Southern division of the county, Coleridge hundred, Stanborough and Coleridge petty sessional division, Kingsbridge union and county court district, rural deanery of Woodleigh, archdeaconry of Totnes and diocese of Exeter. The river Garrah flows through the parish to Slapton Ley, a fresh water lake, separated from the sea by a sand bank, through which the water percolates into Start Bay, on the south-eastern boundary of the parish. The church of St. Michael is a building of stone, in the Perpendicular style, consisting of chancel, nave, aisles, south porch and an embattled western tower containing 6 bells, 5 of which were cast in 1782: the chancel retains piscina and sedilia and in the aisle there is a fine brass to Nicholas Forde, of Forde, ob. 1582, and Margaret (Fountain) his wife: the rood loft stairs still exist, as well as a carved oak screen, curiously painted with varying shades of vermilion and blue, also remains, but in a dilapidated condition; and there is a Norman font: on some of the capitals of the pillars are sculptured the arms of Torr Abbey, which possessed large estates in the parish, and the adjoining estate of Abbotsleigh in Halwell parish: a new organ was provided in 1900, at a cost of £200: the church, with the exception of the chancel, was restored in 1887, when it was new-roofed, re-floored and re-seated, at a cost of £700: in 1893 the chancel was restored, a new vestry and south porch added and heating apparatus fixed throughout, at a cost of about £125; in 1895 the chancel was re-floored and white marble altar steps constructed, at a cost of £40 and the windows were renewed in 1898: there are 400 sittings. The register dates from the year 1538. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £60, including acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the trustees of Mrs. Clements, and held since 1891 by the Rev. George Hartridge Clements Theol. Assoc. K.C.L. There is a Wesleyan chapel. The charities amount to £7 yearly, of which £1 10s. is paid to the vicar for a sermon on St. Jude's Day and 10 shillings to the parish clerk; the remainder is distributed in bread. After the dissolution of the monasteries, Torr Abbey and a large portion of the abbey property passed to the Ridgways, of Torrwood, Torquay. From an unpublished manuscript preserved at Sheplegh Court, it appears that in A.D. 835 King Echberht’s great battle against the West Wealas was fought at Hingeston, in the north-west of the parish, south of Stanborough camp and barrows, and not as generally supposed, at Hingeston Down in Cornwall. The name of Blackawton itself is derived from this very camp, whose Saxon name of Stanborough, or stone barrow, was preceded doubtless by the British name of “Blaighedun,” the hill fort. There are two manors in this parish-Blackawton and Strete or Treverbyn. Henry Limbrey Toll, of Strete manor, is lord of the manors of Treverbyn and Blackawton; Sir William Henry Edward Chaytor bart. of Croft, Darlington, Yorks, William S. Dimes esq. Lewis Richard Netherton esq. of Stoke Fleming, the Messrs. N. P. L. and J. Oldieve and the trustees of the late John Grant are the chief landowners on the north side of the parish; and H. L. Toll and the Right Hon. Charles Seale-Hayne P.C., M.P. of Kingswear Castle, in the Strete district. The soil is generally a rich loam; the subsoil is clay slate, and the best land is in the dun-stone. The chief crops are wheat, barley and oats. The area is 7,447 acres of land, 8 of water and 28 of foreshore; rateable value, including Strete, £6,725; the population in 1901 was 591. By Local Government Board Order 16,310, a detached part of Halwell was added to the parish March 24, 1884.

A School Board of 5 members was formed Aug. 21, 1874; Henry Square, Dartmouth, clerk to the board; John Wills, Blackawton, attendance officer.

Board School (mixed), established 1874, for 150 children; average attendance, 94.
