Historical Description

BRADWORTHY is a large parish and village on the river Walden, 8 miles north-north-west from Holsworthy station on a branch of the London and South Western railway, and 14 south-west from Bideford, in the Western division of the county, hundred of Black Torrington, Holsworthy petty sessional division, union and county court district, rural deanery of Holsworthy, archdeaconry of Barnstaple and diocese of Exeter. The church of St. John the Baptist is an ancient edifice of stone, in the Perpendicular style, consisting of chancel, nave, south porch and an embattled western tower with crocketed pinnacles, restored in 1897 at a cost of £140, and containing 5 bells, the first dating from 1835 and the Test from 1757: it was restored and re-seated in the year 1840, and a memorial window erected to Mrs. Hotchkys: there are other memorial windows, placed in 1898 and 1900 respectively to B. Bosanquet esq. and the Rev. James Bardon Clyde B.A. vicar here 1845—93: there is a finely-carved Jacobean pulpit, and a stone font of Norman date, with a square basin supported on a central shaft surrounded by 4 smaller ones: a new organ was provided in 1899 at a cost of £155: in the chancel and other parts of the church are remains of the ancient tiled floor: there are 300 sittings. The register dates from the year 1548. The living is a vicarage, with the chapelry of Pancras annexed, joint net yearly value £254, including 24 acres of glebe at Bradworthy and 8 at Pancras, with residence, in the gift of the Crown, and held since 1893 by the Rev. William Thomas Wellacott M.A. of St. John’s College, Cambridge. There are Wesleyan and Bible Christian chapels in the village, a Bible Christian chapel at Atworthy, and a Wesleyan chapel at, Bradworthy Cross. Fairs for horses, sheep and cattle are held here on the 9th September and the 2nd Monday in June. The charities amount to £26 annually, which sum is distributed at Christmas. There are many places in this neighbourhood, with the affix “worthy, '’ from the A.S. “weorthig,” a place warded or protected. In the parish of Bradworthy are many indications of Roman settlements. The trustees of the late Mark Shephard esq. are lords of the manor, and the land has for the most part been divided into small holdings. The soil is various; subsoil, clay. The chief crops are oats, barley and wheat. The area is 9,792 acres of land and 37 of water; rateable value, £3,784; the population in 1901 was 847.

A School Board of 5 members was formed Jan. 25, 1881; Elijah Westaway, clerk to the board. This place is also contributory to the Hartland School Board, sending 2 members.

Board School (mixed), erected with residence for the master in 1872, at the expense of Samuel L. L. Lucas esq. but since purchased by the board for 170 children; average attendance, 95.
