Historical Description

BRATTON FLEMING is a parish with a village standing on an acclivity, with a station (opened in 1897) on the Lynton and Barnstaple railway and is 7 miles east-north-east from Barnstaple, in the North Western division of the county, Braunton hundred and petty sessional division, Barnstaple union and county court district, rural deanery of Sherwill, archdeaconry of Barnstaple and diocese of Exeter. At Chelfham, in this parish, on the line of railway from Barnstaple to Lynton, opened Feb. 25, 1897, is a viaduct built of Marland brick, and consists of eight arches rising from stone piers, seventy feet above the roadway; it is about 400 feet long, and cost £6,500. There is also a station at Chelfham. The line in continuation between Bratton Fleming and Blackmore Gate crosses six valleys, viz., Southcott, Nightacot, Specott, Hunnacott, North Thorne and Westland Pound; at the last there will be a station. The church of St. Peter is an ancient building of stone in the Perpendicular style, consisting of chancel, nave, north aisle, south porch and a western tower, with pinnacles, containing 6 bells, cast in 1792: there are 240 sittings. The register dates from the year 1673. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £500, including 250 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of Caius College, Cambridge, and held since 1875 by the Rev. Philip John Wodehouse M.A. late fellow of that college and rural dean of Sherwill. There is a Baptist chapel here and another at Stowford, and also one for Bible Christians, There are six almshouses maintained and built by public subscription. A fair is held on the 19th of August yearly for cattle. About 1840 a considerable inclosure of waste land took place. Capt. Sir Edward Chichester bart. C.B., C.M.G. of Youlston, who is lord of the manor, Sir Charles Thomas Dyke Acland bart. Mr. W. C. Bowden and the rector are the chief landowners. The soil is clayey; the subsoil is clay slate. The greater part is grass land. The area is 5,888 acres of land and 5 of water; rateable value, £5,492; the population in 1901 was 511. The hamlets are:-Haxton, 1 ½ miles south; Benton, 2 miles south-east; Leworthy, 2 miles east; Stowford, 3 miles north; Nightacot, 1 ½ miles north; Chumwell, 1 ½ miles south-west.

A School Board of 5 members was formed Jan. 9, 1884; the Rev. Philip John Wodehouse M.A. rector, chairman; William Arthur, clerk to the board.

Board School (mixed & infants), built in 1840, & enlarged in 1885, for 130 children; average attendance, 91.
