Historical Description

BRIXTON is a parish and village on the road from Plymouth to Modbury, 3 miles south-east from Plympton station on the South Devon section of the Great Western railway and 5 east from Plymouth, in the Southern division of the county, Plympton hundred, Ermington and Plympton petty sessional division, East Stonehouse county court district, Plympton St. Mary union, rural deanery of Plympton, archdeaconry of Totnes and diocese of Exeter. The church of St. Mary is a building of stone in the Perpendicular and earlier styles, consisting of chancel, nave, aisles, vestry, south porch and a lofty embattled western tower containing a clock and 5 bells, all cast by Abel Rudhall, of Gloucester, in 1737: the church was partially restored in 1887, at a cost of £2,500, and further restored in 1894 at a cost of about £2,000 and now affords 316 sittings. In November, 1899, a piece of ground was given for the enlargement of the churchyard, by Hawtrey Collinssplatt esq. The register dates from the year 1668. The living is a perpetual curacy, net yearly value £187, with residence, in the gift of the Dean and Canons of Windsor, and held since 1899 by the Rev. Charles Everitt Green B.A. Christ’t College, Cambridge. Here is a Bible Christian mission hall. The Brixton Institute was the gift of Miss Frances Collinssplatt. A charity of about £29 yearly, derived from parish lands, is equally divided between the poor and general church purposes. The Kennaway endowment, founded in 1874 and amounting to £2 10s. yearly, is equally divided between the poor and the schools. The Binnear charity produces about £6 yearly, which is distributed in coals to the aged poor. A family, taking its name from this place, was anciently resident here, as were also the Calmady, Copleston, Drake, Fortescue, Maynard and Pollexfen families; the Heles held the mansion in the 17th century, and in 1635 Elize Hele, of Wollaton, bequeathed it with his other estates to charitable uses. James E. Moon esq. of Cloudesleigh, who is lord of the manor, Hawtrey Collinssplatt esq. of Brixton House, Mr. Joseph Cane, Baldwin John Pollexfen Bastard esq. of Kitley, Sir Francis G. A. Fuller-Eliott-Drake bart. of Nutwell Court, Exeter, John Kingwell esq. of South Brent, and Mr. William Peter Vosper, of Merafield, Plympton St. Mary, are the principal landowners. The soil is loamy; subsoil, limestone. The chief crops are wheat, barley and green crops. The area is 3,126 acres of land, 5 of tidal water and 93 of water; rateable value, £5,445; the population in 1891 was 622.
