Historical Description

BROADCLYST is a parish, with a station, 1 ½ miles south-east from the village, on the main line of the London and South Western railway, and is 166 ½ miles from London and 5 north-east from Exeter, in the North Eastern division of the county, Cliston hundred, Wonford petty sessional division, St. Thomas union, county court district of Exeter, rural deanery of Aylesbeare and archdeaconry and diocese of Exeter. The church of St. John the Baptist is an ancient building of stone, in the Perpendicular style, repaired about 1834, and consists of chancel, nave, aisles, south porch and an embattled western tower, with pinnacles, containing a clock and 8 bells, of which 6 were cast by Thomas Bilbie in 1768, from a previous peal of 5, and rehung in 1893, in 1897 the peal was increased to 8 by the addition of 2 trebles cast by Messrs. Mears & Stainbank: the church retains three stone sedilia, with buttresses and pinnacles and rich foliaged canopies: in the south wall of the chancel is a fine monument, with the effigy of a knight, in plate armour, probably representing Sir Roger de Nonant, c. 1350, whose family held the manor of Broadclyst, from the reign of Henry I. to that of Edward III.: here also is a tomb and monument to Henry Borough, gent, and Elizabeth, his wife, daughter of George Reynell esq. of Malston, dated 1605: on the north and south faces of the tower are quartered shields, with the coats of Chudleigh, Merton and Nonant: there are four memorial windows; the church affords 600 sittings. The registers date from the year 1653. The living is a vicarage, net yearly income £621, with residence and 84 acres of glebe, in the gift of Sir Charles Thomas Dyke Acland bart. and held since 1896 by the Rev. Charles Probart Whitaker M.A. of Exeter College, Oxford. The chapel of St. Paul, Westwood, erected in 1873—4, at a cost of £1,100, out of trust funds provided by A. H. D. and C. A. W. Troyte esqs. lay impropriators of the rectorial tithes, and consecrated Jan. 19, 1874, is a building of stone in the Decorated style, consisting of chancel, nave and a small western turret containing one bell. Here is also a Baptist chapel, erected in 1883. Burroughes' Almshouses, built by Mr. Henry Burroughes and endowed by him by will in 1605 with £23 11s. payable out of the tithes of Nether Exe, were rebuilt by subscription in 1854 and consist of 12 rooms for 12 single inmates. The “Barker” fund, of about £496 £2 ¾ per Cent. Consols, was founded by deed in 1862, for increasing the stipend of the inmates of these almshouses and supplying them with coals: other charities of £68 4s. yearly value are distributed in bread and money, and there are educational endowments amounting to £34 10s. yearly. On Killerton Hill is a camp. Killerton, the residence of Sir Charles Thomas Dyke Acland bart. M.A., D.L., J.P. stands in a beautiful expanse of well-wooded land, nearly surrounded by the rivers Culm and Clyst and well stocked with game and deer: the park, which is 160 acres in extent, affords very fine views of the surrounding country for many miles, including Dartmoor to the west, Woodbury to the south and Black Down to the east; within the park stands the domestic chapel of the Holy Evangelists. There is also a private chapel at Culm John for use in connection with a private burial ground. Sprydoncote is the residence of Lady Walrond. The manor was sometime held by the Chudleigh family, who became possessed of it through the marriage of John Chudleigh with Jane (Beauchamp), daughter of Sir John Beauchamp and Alice (Nonant), his wife. Sir C. T. Dyke Acland bart. who is lord of the manor, Lord Poltimore J.P., W. F. Richards esq. Thomas Wish, Richard Merry, William Merry, Henry Trump and John Trump esqs. are chief landowners. The soil is chiefly loam and clay; subsoil, gravel. The crops are roots and cereals. The area is 9,302 acres of land and 24 of water; rateable value, £17,679; the population in 1901 was 1,899.
