Historical Description
BROADHEMPSTON is a parish, 2 ½ miles north-east from Staverton station on the Ashburton branch of the Great Western railway, 4 ½ north from Totnes, 4 south-east from Ashburton and 5 ½ south-west from Newton Abbot, in the Mid division of the county, Haytor hundred, Teignbridge petty sessional division, Newton Abbot union, Newton Abbot and Torquay county court district, rural deanery of Totnes, and archdeaconry and diocese of Exeter. The church of SS. Peter & Paul, standing on high ground in the south-west quarter of the village, is an ancient edifice of stone, rebuilt in 1402, and consisting of chancel, nave, north and south aisles, divided from the nave by arcades of five arches, south porch and an embattled western tower, containing 6 bells, 5 of which were cast in the churchyard in 1781, by John Christopher and William Pennington, of Lezant; the 6th was added in 1887 as a memorial of the Queen’s Jubilee: the font, richly carved, is of earlier date than the church and has an octagonal basin, adorned with quatrefoils and shields bearing alternately two keys and two swords in saltire: the rood screen, of carved oak, much mutilated, is rudely painted in various colours; it extends across both aisles, and has attached parcloses, formerly inclosing chantry chapels; the upper part of the screen retains some good Perpendicular tracery; the lower stage was once painted with figures of saints, now no longer visible: some of the windows retain fragments of ancient glass, including the arms of the Barnhouse and Rowe families: there are three sedilia in the chancel and piscinae in the chancel and aisles: the stained east window is a memorial to Mrs. Adams, formerly of this parish, and there is another memorial window to Miss Williams: traces of an aspersorium or stoup remain in the porch: in the chancel is a tablet with arms, to Robert Warreyng and Ellinor, his wife, 1656; and to Robert Warreyng, Mary, his wife, and Avis, their daughter, with arms and a rhyming epitaph; on the floor are grave stones inscribed to William Jesse, 30 years vicar here, ob. 27 March, 1679, and to Elizabeth and William Jesse, 1645—6: in 1879 the chancel was thoroughly restored and re-roofed with pitch pine: the communion plate, partly the gift of the Rev. Samuel Whaley, vicar in 1712, consists of a chalice, two patens and an alms-dish: the nave and aisles were thoroughly restored in 1896 at a cost of £1,200, and the screen is now (1901) about to be restored at an estimated cost of £500: there are 200 sittings. The churchyard is large and neatly kept and contains several fine yew trees. The register of burials dates from the year 1678, baptisms and marriages 1681. The living is a vicarage, net yearly income £247, including 37 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the Crown, and held since 1873 by the Rev. Frederick Townsend Chamberlain M.A. of Trinity College, Dublin. There are Wesleyan and Baptist chapels; the latter was built in 1844 by Edward Palk esq. then lord of the manor. An ancient almshouse of Perpendicular date stands near the churchyard. The charities consist of £3 yearly, left by William Jesse, vicar in 1679; and 20s. yearly from Petre's charity, left by John Petre, of Exeter, who died 3 Feb. 1576; these are distributed in kind to the poor at Christmas. Richard Palk esq. is lord of the manor; Lord Percy St. Maur of Burton Hall, Leic. the trustees of the late Major Twist, William Mann esq. William James Waye esq. William Blackler esq. Daniel Robt. Scratton esq. of Ogwell, Newton Abbot, and the trustees of the late R. Bowerman West esq. of Streatham Hall, Exeter, are the principal landowners. The soil is clay; subsoil, slate and dunstone. The crops are wheat, pasture and roots. The parish contains 2,200 acres; rateable value, £4,184; the population in 1901 was 445.
Ambrook, a detached part of Staverton, was added to this parish March 25th, 1884, by Local Government Board Order, 16,309.
