Historical Description
BROADWOOD WIDGER is an extensive parish and village, 3 miles east from Tower Hill station and 3 ½ from Ashwater station, both on the London and South Western railway, the latter being the more convenient station for the north part of this parish; it is also 3 miles north from Lifton station on the Launceston branch of the Great Western railway, 12 north-west from Tavistock, and 7 north-east from Launceston, in the Western division of the county, Lifton hundred and petty sessional division, Launceston union and county court district, rural deanery of Trigg Major, archdeaconry of Bodmin and diocese of Truro. The church of St. Nicholas is an ancient structure of various styles and dates, consisting of chancel with south chapel separated from the chancel by an arcade of two arches, and forming an organ chamber, nave of four bays, south aisle, north transept, south porch and an embattled western tower with pinnacles containing 5 bells, all cast in 1775: in the south chapel is an altar tomb, panelled with niches, containing small figures, and on the upper slab lies the mutilated recumbent effigy of a knight in plate armour of unusual character and covered with an open flowing robe; the hands and legs are missing; the figure, according to Westcote, represents William Shilston, of Upcott, in this parish: one of the windows in the south aisle is stained: the church retains a good oak chancel screen and some richly carved benches, dating from 1529: the fabric was restored in 1871, and has sittings for 140 persons. The register dates from the year 1654. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £292, including 60 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the Dean and Chapter of Bristol, and held since 1893 by the Rev. Townley George Loarn Blackwood-Price M.A. of Trinity College, Cambridge. The Mission Church of St. Patrick Ivy house was erected in 1897 and will seat 70. There is a Wesleyan chapel at Downacarry, a Bible Christian chapel at Grinnicombe Moor, another at Rexton Cross, and a Baptist chapel at Cross Green. Witherdon, a mansion in the Gothic style, is the residence of Trednham Hugh Spry esq. J.P. The manorial rights are divided. Tredenham Hugh Spry esq. J.P. John Albert Rundle Perkin esq. James Oag esq. J.P. Alexander Macbeth esq. J.P. John Penhale esq. The Misses Gamlen, of Dawlish, Jams Hargrave esq. of Lyme Regis, Dorset, Mrs. Richd. Ford, of 17 Park street, Park lane, London W. Frank Bradshaw esq. of Lifton Park, and Henry Fairfax Harvey esq. of Highcroft, Heavitree, Exeter, are the principal landowners. The soil is loamy; subsoil, clay and slate. The chief crops are wheat, oats, barley and pasture. The area is 10,630 acres of land and 25 of water; rateable value, £5,519; the population in 1901 is 713. By Local Government Board Order 15,034, which came into operation March 24, 1884, a detached part of Lifton, known as Westweek, in Tavistock union, and a part of Bratton Clovelly, was amalgamated with this parish.
The north part of the parish is served from Beaworthy via Ashwater.
