Historical Description

CHERITON BISHOP is a parish and village in a pleasant dale, traversed by the high road from Exeter to Plymouth, and is 4 miles south from Yeoford junction station on the main line of the London and South Western railway, 10 west from Exeter and 7 south-west from Crediton, in the Mid division of the county, Wonford hundred, Moreton Hampstead petty sessional division, Crediton union and county court district, rural deanery of Kenn and archdeaconry and diocese of Exeter. The church of St. Mary is an ancient building of stone, in the Early English and Perpendicular styles, consisting of chancel, nave, north aisle, south porch and a fine embattled western tower containing 6 bells, all dated 1770, except the fourth, which was cast in 1803: the church retains a Norman font, and there are several stained windows and mural tablets to the Rev. Henry Fothergill M.A. 45 years rector of the parish, d. 1792, and John Davy esq. ob. 1695, and his two wives; the south wall and porch were rebuilt in 1884 by the late Edward Hyde Pennell esq. and the nave was new roofed in 1896, and the west end has since been reseated: there are 250 sittings. The register dates from the year 1538. The living is a rectory, net yearly income £327, including 56 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the Bishop of Exeter, and held since 1887 by the Rev. Joseph Brettell Housman M.A. of Worcester College, Oxford. There is a small Plymouth Brethren chapel, seating 100 persons. The charities amount to about £15 yearly value, and are invested in the name of feoffees. A pleasure fair is annually held on Wednesday in Whitsun week. The manor, now dismembered, anciently belonged to the Bishops of Exeter, who had considerable landed property here. The manor of Eggbeare belonged to the Kellys, afterwards to the Fulfords, and is now the property of Francis Drummond Fulford esq. of Great Fulford: the manor of Lampford, said to have been anciently the chief manor here, also belongs to him. The manor of Medland, which once belonged to Tewkesbury Abbey, is now held by George Pennell esq. Coxland belongs to Mr. J. L. Gorwyn; Horselake, to John Guscotte esq. Pitton, Mill and North Bowden, together 393 acres in extent, are partly in this parish and partly in Crediton, and were purchased in 1876 of the Pennells by Mr. William Cheriton Morris. Easton, held for generations by the Bragg family, is now the property of Mrs. Ponsford, of Budleigh Salterton. Hackworthy and Melhuish belong to F. D. Fulford esq. and Upper Mounson to Mrs. Tabb, of Redruth, Cornwall. The barton of Meston belongs to John Ponsford esq. and Woodleigh to R. A. Cuddeford esq. The principal seat is Venbridge House, the property of Henley Grose Smith esq. of St. Helen’s, Isle of Wight, and now occupied by Reginald Templar esq. The chief landowners are Francis Drummond Fulford esq. of Great Fulford, Messrs. J. and W. Hole, Mr. W. G. Haydon, Mr. John Lambert Gorwyn, John Ponsford esq. H. G. Smith esq. G. B. Pennell esq. the trustees of Wm. C-Morris, Mr. Knapman, P. F. Bellew esq. John Strong, of Drewsteignton, William Henry Kelland esq. Mr. William Farley, W. E. Elphinstone-Stone, Mr. T. Tabb and R. A. Cuddeford esq. The soil is clayey; the subsoil is wet, yellow clay; the land has been improved by draining. The chief crops are wheat and apples. The area is 4,939 acres; rateable value, £3,119; the population in 1891 was 560.

A School Board of 5 members was formed Jan. 13, 1875; Mrs. Mary Sanders, clerk to the board; Samuel L. Davy, Cheriton Cross, attendance officer.

Board School (mixed), built in 1880, at a cost of £500, for 100 children; average attendance, 70.
