Historical Description

CHRISTOW is a parish and village on the river reign, 1 ½ miles south-east from Ashton station on the reign Valley branch of the Great Western railway, 7 east from Moreton Hampstead and 8 south-west from Exeter, in the North Eastern division of the county, Wonford hundred and petty sessional division, St. Thomas union, Exeter county court district, rural deanery of Kenn and archdeaconry and diocese of Exeter. There is a goods station on the reign Valley branch of the Great Western railway, near reign House inn, in this parish, about 1 mile from the village. The church of St. James is an ancient building of granite in the Perpendicular style, consisting of chancel, nave, south porch and an embattled western tower, with pinnacles, containing a clock and 6 bells: in the church is a monument to Edward, first Viscount Exmouth G.C.B, captor of Algiers in 1816, d. Jan. 23, 1833, and there are memorials to other members of the Pellew family; the flag borne by Lord Exmouth’s ship at the battle of Algiers is also preserved here: there is a memorial window to the Woollcombe family, and one to the Hon. and Rev. Edward Pellew, a former vicar, d. Aug. 29, 1869, and Mary Ann (Winthrop). his wife: the stained east window was presented by Viscountess Exmouth in 1900. in memory of Edward, 4th Viscount Exmouth, who died in 1899: at the entrance of the porch is a stone to Nathaniel Busell, 46 years “clark heere, dyed 19th February, 1631,” of whom tradition reports that ho was killed in defending the church against Cromwell: the organ was presented in 1887, in memory of the Rev. J. T. Hassall, late vicar, by his son and daughter: a handsome corona was placed in the chancel in the same year by the 4th Viscount Exmouth: some remains exist of ancient oak screens: there are 300 sittings. In the churchyard are four very fine yew trees. The register dates from the year 1554. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £164, with 1 acre of glebe and residence, in the gift of Viscount Exmouth, and held since 1892 by the Rev. Courtenay John Bulteel B.A. of Magdalen College, Oxford. Here are Baptist and Wesleyan chapels. Charities producing £4 6s. 8d. are distributed in bread. The Tottiford and Kennick reservoir of the Torquay water works, situated mostly in this parish, on the Moreton road, is a fine sheet of water, comprising altogether nearly 74 acres, and is a great resort of anglers. The Wheal Frank Mills and Wheal Exmouth silver and lead mines here have not been worked for some time. Canonteign House, the seat of Viscountess Exmouth, is a fine mansion, standing on an eminence in park-like grounds, and affords extensive views of the surrounding country. The principal landowners are the trustees of the late Viscount Exmouth (d. 1899), who are lords of the manor, the Corporation of Torquay and the Commercial Union Assurance Company. The soil is loam; subsoil, granite. The chief crops are wheat, barley, oats and potatoes. The area is 3,096 acres of land and 73 of water; rateable value, £3,856; the population in 1901 was 520.

A School Board of 7 members was formed March 17, 1875, for the united district of Christow & Doddiscombleigh; Thomas Coleridge, Doddiscombleigh, hon. clerk to the board; George Percy, attendance officer.
