The church of SS. Peter and Paul is a building of stone in the Perpendicular style, remarkable for the beauty of its window tracery and the elegance of the arcade dividing the nave and aisle: it consists of chancel, nave, south aisle, south porch and a western tower containing 5 bells, rehung in 1897; the font is Early English and there are some very fine remains of oak carving: the east window is stained and there are memorial windows to the Rev. R. P. Clarke M.A. late rector, and to Mrs. Edwards; a good rood screen existed up to the early part of the present century: the chancel has been restored: the church will seat 480 persons. The register dates from the year 1662. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £289, including 122 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of and held since 1881 by the Rev. Otterhead, in this parish, belonging to Robert Lewis Lloyd esq. J.P. is a mansion in the Tudor style, beautifully situated in its own grounds, at the source of the river Otter. The land is now all freehold, the manor having been extinct since 1802, at which time, by an inclosure award, under special Act of Parliament, the then lord received an allotment of common in lieu of all manorial rights. The Rt. Hon. John William Mellor P.C., K.C., M.P., M.A., J.P of Culmhead; Miss Baker; Robert Lewis Lloyd esq. J.P. of Otterhead, Harry Catford and Robert Dommett esqrs. are the principal landowners. The area is 5,168 acres; rateable value, £2,982; the population in 1891 was 672.

A School Board of 5 members was formed April 16, 1875; W. Dommett, Willand, clerk to the board.
