Historical Description

CLAWTON is a parish and small village, 3 miles south from the market town of Holsworthy, which is the nearest railway station, on the London and South Western railway, in the Western division of the county, hundred of Black Torrington, petty sessional division, union and county court district of Holsworthy, rural deanery of Holsworthy, archdeaconry of Barnstaple and diocese of Exeter. The name is derived from a stream called the Claw, which flows through the parish, and is crossed by two small bridges, each of one arch only; the village is about half a mile west of the road from Holsworthy to Launceston. The church of St. Leonard is an ancient edifice of stone of the Norman, Decorated and Perpendicular periods, consisting of chancel, nave of four bays, aisles, south porch and an embattled western tower, with pinnacles at the angles, containing 3 bells, the first two dating from 1739 and the third from 1713: the font is Norman, and there are several ancient monuments and a hagioscope: the church retains a piscina, and the rood stairs remain, and some portions of an ancient screen: the church was restored and re-seated in 1893, and affords sittings for about 250 persons. The registers date from the year 1694, and there are parish records from 1593. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £69, in the gift of the Rev. George Douglas Melhuish M.A. rector of Ashwater, and held since 1881 by the Rev. Herbert Upton Squire, of St. Aidans, who is also rector of Tetcott, where he resides. There is a Wesleyan chapel at Clawton Bridge, and one for Bible Christians at the west end of the parish. Mrs. Richard Ford, of 17 Park street, Park lane, London W. Pencarrow, Bodmin, Cornwall, and the Rev. George Douglas Melhuish M.A. are the principal landowners. H.R.H. the Duke of Cornwall and York K.G. also owns an estate in this parish. The soil is various; subsoil, clay. The chief crops are oats and roots, and some pasture land. The area is 5,387 acres of land and 22 of water; rateable value, £2,247; the population in 1901 was 329.

A School Board of 5 members was formed Aug. 7, 1874, for the united district of Clawton, Tetcott & Luffincott; J. J. E. Venning, Devonport, clork to the board.

Board School (mixed), erected in 1876, for 60 children; average attendance, 42.
