Historical Description
CLAYHIDON is a village and parish on the south side of the Blackdown Hills, near the source of the river Culm, 2 miles north-east from Hemyock terminal station of a branch from Tiverton of the Great Western railway, 15 east-north-east from Tiverton, and 4 ½ south-south-east from Wellington (Somerset), in the North Eastern division of the county, hundred of Hemyock, petty sessional division of Cullompton, union and county court district of Wellington, rural deanery of Dunkeswell and Honiton and archdeaconry and diocese of Exeter. This parish has been much improved by the inclosure of common lands and the formation of roads. The church of St. Andrew is a building of stone in the Decorated and Perpendicular styles, consisting of chancel, nave, south aisle, south porch and an embattled western tower containing 5 bells: the interior has been repaired and embellished, and the four chancel windows are stained: there is a recessed and canopied tomb in the south aisle with the upper half of the effigy of a priest vested. The register dates from the year 1637; but the marriage register, 1789—1802, was destroyed by a fire at the glebe house. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £296, with residence and 84 acres of glebe, in the gift of the trustees of the late Gen. the Rt. Hon. Sir E. Lugard G.C.B., P.C. (d. 1898) and J. C. Langdon esq. and held since 1870 by the Rev. Walrond Whitter Clarke M.A of Emmanuel College, Cambridge. There is a Baptist chapel, erected in 1852, and one for Plymouth Brethren. There are charities to the amount of about £8 annually. At Newcott farm are the remains of an ancient chapel, the piscina of which has been removed to-an adjacent cottage. Garlandhayes, formerly the property of the Burrow and Kelland families, now belongs to R. Vellacott esq. The manor of Culme-Pyne is the property of Col. Robert W. W. Follett, of Old Windsor, The manor once belonged to the ancient family of Hidon, but Octavius Gardner Walter esq. is now lord of the manor, and manorial courts are held periodically; the Blackmore family, the trustees of the late Mrs. Pring, the Misses Lemon, Richard Burrow. J. Troake, S. A. Walker, Messrs. McWilliam and Rowcliffe, the Rev. Edwd. Brian Combe Spurway M.A. of Haines Hill, Taunton, and Henry Hulme esq. of Applehayes, are chief landowners. The chief crops are wheat, oats, barley and pasture land. The soil is black peat and clayey, and the subsoil various. The area is 4,463 acres; rateable value, £3,749; the population in 1901 was 463, 23 of whom are within the ecclesiastical parish of Dunkeswell Abbey.

A School Board of 5 members was formed March 23, 1875; Wm. Blackmore, Cordwents, clerk to the board.
