This parish has been much improved by the inclosure of common lands and the formation of roads. The church of St. Andrew is a building of stone in the Decorated and Perpendicular styles, consisting of chancel, nave, south aisle, south porch and an embattled western tower containing 5 bells: the interior has been repaired and embellished, and the four chancel windows are stained: there is a recessed and canopied tomb in the south aisle with the upper half of the effigy of a priest vested. The register dates from the year 1637; but the marriage register, 1789—1802, was destroyed by a fire at the glebe house. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £296, with residence and 84 acres of glebe, in the gift of the trustees of the late Gen. the Rt. Hon. Sir E. Lugard G.C.B., P.C. (d. 1898) and J. C. Garlandhayes, formerly the property of the Burrow and Kelland families, now belongs to R. Vellacott esq. The manor of Culme-Pyne is the property of Col. Robert W. W. Follett, of Old Windsor, The manor once belonged to the ancient family of Hidon, but Octavius Gardner Walter esq. is now lord of the manor, and manorial courts are held periodically; the Blackmore family, the trustees of the late Mrs. Pring, the Misses Lemon, Richard Burrow. J. Troake, S. A. Walker, Messrs. McWilliam and Rowcliffe, the Rev. Edwd. Brian Combe Spurway M.A. of Haines Hill, Taunton, and Henry Hulme esq. of Applehayes, are chief landowners. The chief crops are wheat, oats, barley and pasture land. The soil is black peat and clayey, and the subsoil various. The area is 4,463 acres; rateable value, £3,749; the population in 1901 was 463, 23 of whom are within the ecclesiastical parish of Dunkeswell Abbey.
