Historical Description
CLYST ST. GEORGE is a village and parish, 1 ½ miles east-by-north from Topsham station on the Exmouth branch of the London and South Western railway, and 5 south-east from Exeter, in the Eastern division of the county, hundred of East Budleigh, petty sessional division of Woodbury, union of St. Thomas, county court district of Exeter, rural deanery of Aylesbeare and archdeaconry and diocese of Exeter: it is the most southern of the six Clyst parishes, in the valley of the small river Clyst, which falls into the Exe at Topsham, and over which there is a stone bridge of five arches, on the road from Exeter to Exmouth. The church of St. George is an ancient building of red sandstone in the Perpendicular style, consisting of chancel, nave, north aisle, south porch and an embattled western tower containing a clock and 6 bells: in 1757 the fabric was repaired and decorated: the church was restored and reseated with open benches with finely-carved ends in 1852: in 1888, a now vestry on the north side of the chancel was added, the organ enlarged and oak choir stalls and corridor to the pulpit erected at a cost of £500: the interior walls are decorated with the “Stations of the Cross” in relief: the pulpit, inlaid with mosaic, was the gift of Samuel Parr esq. of Knowle, in 1852: two parclose screens have been erected from designs by Mr. R. Medley Fulford, architect: the carved oak reredos, with its painted panels, was executed as well as the screens, by Hems, of Exeter, and together with the communion table was given by the parishioners as a memorial to the Rev. Henry Thomas Ellacombe M.A. lata rector, who died July 30th, 1885: all the windows are stained, and one of these displays the arms of John Wynard, who, with Isabella, his wife, erected the old east window: in the north aisle is a monument to the Gibbs family, dated 1652—83 and 1708, and one with arms to Richard Osborn esq. ob. Sept. 6th, 1705; there are also monuments to Richard Pidgley, a benefactor to the parish, d. Oct. 15th, 1802: on the north wall is a brass with the effigy of a lady, in veil and high-crowned hat, kneeling before a prie-dieu; on one side is an impaled shield of arms: and below an inscription to Julian Osborne (nee Bonifant), ob. Aug. 18, 1614; another brass is inscribed to John Gibbe, ob. Dec. 24, 1504: a lych-gate was erected in 1867: there are 200 sittings. The register dates from the year 1567. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £210, with residence and 7 ¼ acres of glebe, in the gift of Antony Gibbs esq. and held since 1897 by the Rev. Mortimer Drury Buckingham M.A. of Exeter College, Oxford. The earliest mention of the advowson of the church is in the “Valor Ecclesiasticus” of Pope Nicholas, 1291, wherein “Eccl’ia de Clistwick” is valued at £2. The charities, producing £6 annually, are distributed in bread. Knowle, the property of Mrs. Alexander Sim, is the residence of Craven Burrell Fuller esq In Domesday Book this manor is called “Clisewic,” and was one of fifty-eight manors granted to Ralph de Pomerai by William the Conqueror; the Plantagenet Earls of Cornwall held it in the 13th century, and in the 15th century it was held by William 1st Baron Bonville, who was beheaded by Queen Margaret, after the defeat of the Yorkists at the second battle of St. Albans, Feb. 17, 1461: Thomas (Grey), 2nd Marquis of Dorset, and his son Henry, Duke of Suffolk K.G. were the next holders; after the last-named nobleman was beheaded on Tower hill, 23rd Feb. 1554, the manor passed by grant of the Crown to the Prideaux family, who held it for several generations: it was next sold to Peter Trogse and afterwards held by William Fortescue, Thomas Dupre Porcher, in 1814, and John Creswell in 1821, whose great nephew, Col. Sir William Hood Walrond bart. M.P. is the present holder. The principal landowners are the Rev. F. Arthur Wolfe Hamilton-Gell M.A. of Winslade, Clyst St. Mary; Alexander Kelso Hamilton, of The Retreat, Topsham; Antony Gibbs esq. of Tyntesfield, Somerset; William Barnes esq. of Great Duryard; Mr. John Drewe Pratt, of Bellevue, Exmouth; the trustees of the late William Reed; Mr. J. R. Watkins, of Teignmouth and Mrs. Alexander Sim, of Harrow Weald, Middlesex. The soil is a mixture of clay and sand; subsoil, clay and large pebble. The chief crops are the usual cereals and pasture, beans alone being ittle grown. The area is 1,039 acres of land, 8 of tided water and 6 of foreshore; rateable value, £2,337; the population in 1901 was 241.
Endowed School (mixed), erected in 1859, for 70 children; average attendance, 50; & endowed by the late Lady Seaward with £30 yearly from land; the school bell, inscribed “san Roqua ora pro nobis ano De, 1788,” belonged to the Convent of Burmeo, on the north coast of Spain, & was brought home as a trophy by the late Sir George Collier, then commanding the “Surveillante”.
