Historical Description
St. Mary Clyst stands upon the river Grindle. The valley through which this stream runs is very flat, and the length of the bridge, which is narrow, is a proof of the extent to which the meadows are sometimes inundated on each side.
Clyst-house is a large, square, white building, standing in a lawn of about sixty acres. The church of Clyst is an ancient edifice.
Between Sidmouth and Exmouth lie the following places: Otterton, Bicton, Woodbury Budleigh, Budleigh Salterton, and Littleham. Otterton and Bicton are very plainly to be seen from Peak-hill.
CLYST ST. MARY is a parish and village, on the high road from Exeter to Sidmouth and on the river Clyst, which is here crossed by a very ancient bridge of 5 small arches, having retaining walls about 200 yards long; it is 2 ½ miles north-east from Topsham station on the Exmouth branch of the London and South Western railway, 3 ½ east-south-east from Exeter, 12 north-west from Sidmouth, in the Eastern division of the county. East Budleigh hundred, Woodbury petty sessional division, St. Thomas union, Exeter county court district, rural deanery of Aylesbeare and archdeaconry and diocese of Exeter. The village, commonly known as Clyst St. Mary, is partly in each of the parishes of Clyst St. Mary, Bishop’s Clyst, Sowton and Faringdon; it was destroyed by the Royal troops in the 16th century, when Sir William Winslade is said to have been hanged as a rebel in a lane of the village. The church of St. Mary the Virgin is a cruciform building of stone in the Early English style, consisting of chancel, nave, aisles and an embattled western tower, containing a clock, given by the late Mr. Golsworthy, of Exeter, in 1843, and 3 bells; the first and third have early Latin inscriptions; the second is dated 1674: the transepts were added in 1818: the church was restored and enlarged in 1870 and a new vestry added, through the liberality of J. Dixon esq. who died December, 1885, and to whom a memorial window has been inserted; there are several other stained windows, and the church affords 200 sittings. The register dates from the year 1662. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £140, including 32 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of C. Brownlow esq. of Mount Stewart, county Down, and held since 1894 by the Rev. Fielding Arthur Wolfe Hamilton-Gell M.A., Mus. Bac. of Trinity College, Dublin & J. P. Devon. The charities are of £10 yearly value and include the Tantezen charity, consisting of a field, now let for £5 10s. yearly, for repairing the fabric of the church; Holbrook’s charity of £3 for the education of poor children; a meadow left by the Rev. John Cicely and producing £1 yearly, for 4 poor labourers, and Miss Harriet Pearson’s charity of 16s. 4d. yearly for poor women: there is also a bread dole of so much bread as is purchasable at 4s. a quarter, payable quarterly by the tenant of Kennyford. Winslade, the seat of the Rev. Fielding Arth. Wolfe Hamilton-Gell M.A., Mus.Bac., J.P. situated in an extensive and well-wooded park of about 100 acres, near the Clyst, is a large and substantial mansion, with a handsome Classic portico; in front of the house is a balustraded terrace, overlooking an ornamental garden and park: the house is approached from the village by a carriage drive of about half a mile, with entrance gates and a lodge. Greendale House is the seat of Marion, Lady Dunboyne. The manor was held in the 16th and 17th centuries by the Earls of Bedford, and by them sold to Peter Beavis: Lord Graves purchased it together with Sowton at commencement of this century; both are now held by Lieut.-Col. John Arthur Thomas Garratt D.L., J.P. of Bishop’s Court. The Rev. F. A. W. Hamilton-Gell M.A. Marion, Lady Dunbovne, William C. Barnes esq. of Great Duryard and the Ven. Charles Wellington Furse M.A. of Halsdon, North Dervon, are the chief landowners. The soil is gravel sand and clay; subsoil, red sandstone, marl and blue clay. The chief crops are wheat, oats, barley and beans. The area is 586 acres; rateable value, £1,306; the population in 1901 was 157.
