Historical Description
COLEBROOKE is a parish and village, 2 miles south from Copplestone station and 2 north-west from Yeoford station, both on the North Devon branch of the London and South Western railway, and 4 west of Crediton, in the Northern division of the county, Crediton hundred, petty sessional division, union and county court district, rural deanery of Cadbury, and archdeaconry and diocese of Exeter. The London and South Western lines to Barnstaple and Plymouth pass through the parish. The church of St. Andrew is a building of stone in the Perpendicular style, consisting of chancel, nave, north aisle, a chapel on the south side of the nave, south porch and an embattled western tower with pinnacles, containing a dock and 6 bells, dated respectively 1676, 1854, 1627, 1751, 1787 and 1887: the north aisle, dating from about the middle of the 15th century, was probably erected by John Copleston, and retains a handsome screen of oak, with pierced tracery and carved panels with the linen pattern: some of the ancient bench ends display the arms of Copleston and Gorges, supported by figures of savages: in the centre of the floor of the north aisle is a flat stone inscribed to John Copleston esq. ob. 1455, and his wife, ob. June 9, 1457: in the chapel are two arched canopied recesses, a piscina and two hagioscopes, and in the chancel are mural tablets to the Sillifants, to Elizabeth, wife of Sir John Coryton bart. ob. 1677, and to the Burringtons of West Sandford, 1666 and 1659, with the following quaint epitaph: —
“About this instant arose a strife,
Betwixt the Claymers, Death and Life; ‘ Shee's mine, ’ saith Death,
Saith Life, ‘ Shee’s mine, I have possession, shee's not thine, '
But Death, the stronger and more bold,
Prevayled, and Life gave up her hold.
God parts the strife,
Takes her from Death againe
And gives her life
For ever to remaine.”
There are modern memorials to the Hamlyns, a memorial window in the chancel to John Woolcombe Sillifant esq. of Coombe, d. 1868, and one in the chapel to Samuel Norrish esq. d. 1888: the reredos, executed by Hems of Exeter, was presented in 1896 by Mrs. F. S. Sillifant in memory of her late husband: the font has a restored cover of the 15th century: the modern Sun.-dial on the church is by Hems, and was the gift of Charles Turner: in 1895 the church was reseated in oak, and now affords 200 sittings. The registers date from the year 1558. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £202, including 15 ½ acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the Dean and Chapter of Exeter, and held since 1885 by the Rev. Isidore Daimpre B.A. of Trinity College, Dublin. There were once chapels at Copleston, Landsend, Horwell, Hooke and Whelmstone, of which the three latter and the ruins of that at Copleston were standing in 1772. On the 25th May, 1897, base of an ancient cross, dating from the 5th century, was discovered in the vicarage grounds. Charities producing £9 yearly are distributed in money. At the junction of this parish with those of Crediton and Down St. Mary, stands the venerable relic known as “Copleston Cross, ’’ for which see Crediton. Higher Wootton belongs to Sir John Shelley bart.; Paschoe and Whelmstone to-Holley esq. of Leawood, near Bridestowe, Coombe, Knowle, Landsend, Great Wootton, Painstone Barton and Penston belong to Arthur O. Sillifant esq. of Coombe, and Horwell to the representatives of the late Samuel Norrish. Hooke was anciently the property and residence of a family of the same name; tradition refers their possession to a very remote period, and it probably belonged to them from the reign of Henry HI. when surnames came into general use and were chiefly taken by families from the place of their abode. Landsend, formerly the property of the Yonge family, now belongs to A. O. Sillifant esq. of Coombe, whose ancestor became possessed of the latter estate in 1677 by intermarriage with the Snell family. The manor was for centuries held by the de Bathe family, but is now the property of William Coryton esq. of Pentillie Castle, Cornwall. A. O. Sillifant esq.-Holley esq. of Leawood, Bridestowe, W. Coryton esq. Messrs. W. & J. M. Pope, and the representatives of the late Samuel Norrish esq. are the chief landowners. The soil is chiefly clay; subsoil, the same. The principal crops are wheat, barley and oats. The area is 4,770 acres; rateable value, £4,892; the population in 1891 was 705 in the civil and 719 in the ecclesiastical parish.
By Local Government Board Order, 16,408, Brittle Downs and Cottages were transferred for civil purposes, March 24, 1884, from Colebrooke to Crediton.
A School Board of 5 members was formed November 13, 1873; John Willcocks, Colebrooke, clerk to the board.
