Historical Description

COMBE-IN-TEIGNHEAD is a parish and village, in the reign valley, about half a mile from the south bank of the river, 3 miles west from Newton Abbot and 3 south-west from Teignmouth station on the Great Western railway, 10 north-east-by-north from Totnes and 6 north-west-by-north from Torquay, in the Mid division of the county, Wonford hundred, Teignbridge petty sessional division, Newton Abbot union, Newton Abbot and Torquay county court district, rural deanery of Moreton, archdeaconry of Totnes and diocese of Exeter. Under the “Divided Parishes Act, 1882,” this place was annexed, 25 March, 1885, to the adjoining parish of Haccombe, which for all civil purposes is now known as “Haccombe-with-Combe.” The church is an ancient cruciform edifice of stone in the Perpendicular style, with some Norman details, consisting of chancel, nave of three bays, aisles, transept, north porch and an embattled western tower with four crocketed pinnacles and a turret containing a clock and 6 bells, re-hung in 1897 at a cost of £100: the east and west windows are stained, the latter having been presented by the rector in 1887: the rood screen and the seats in the north transept, belonging to the Carew family, are of old and richly-carved oak: the interior of the church was thoroughly restored in 1887—8, at a cost of £1,300, from designs by Mr. R. M. Fulford, architect, of Exeter, when a new organ was erected, the old seats replaced by solid oak benches, the aisles and chancel floor repaved, the nave and aisles refloored with wood blocks, the exquisitely carved chancel screen cleaned and restored and a new oak pulpit erected: the Norman font of Beer stone has a circular basin, carved and enriched with diaper work: in the north transept is an altar tomb with arms and brass to Alyce Hockmore, of Buckland Barton, ob. April 2nd, 1613; there is also a brass to Anne Frances, wife of Sir Walter Palk Carew bart. d. June 8th, 1859, erected by the inhabitants of this parish, and there are numerous tablets to the Wrey, Wilkings, Metherell, Sanders, Martin and Lang families: the church affords 230 sittings, and is approached through two lych gates. The register dates as follows:-Baptisms from the year 1669; marriages and burials from 1653. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £368, including 52 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of Sir Robert B. S. Wrey bart. of Tawstock, and held since 1864 by the Rev. Bourchier William Toke Wrey S.C.L. of Trinity College, Cambridge. There are a few small charities. The Earl of Bath left a house called “Church House.” the rent, £3, to be applied towards the repairs of the church, and 5s. yearly from the Bridge Estate for the poor; Miss Margaret Burgoyne left in 1789 the interest on £100, for teaching 10 poor children to read; in 1862 the Rev. John Wrey, of Teignmouth, formerly rector of this parish, gave a sum of £1,500, of which the rector of this parish and the Archdeacon of Totnes for the time being are the trustees, the interest (now amounting to £75 yearly) to be apportioned towards the support of the school, the lying-in charity, the reipair of the ornamental parts of the church, cleaning the churchyard, to provide coals, clothing and bread for the poor, and in aid of the Teignmouth Infirmary and the Exeter Hospital. Joseph Woodis Clulow Washington esq. of Starcross, is lord of the manor, the Earl of Devon, the Misses Carew, of Haccombe, and Arthur Denis H. H. Reynell-Pack esq. of Netherton House, Newton Abbot, are the principal landowners. The soil is of sandstone and clay; subsoil, gravel. The chief crops are wheat, barley and roots, and there is much pasture land. The area is 2,546 acres of land, including Haccombe, 35 of tidal water and 161 of foreshore; rateable value, £3,245; the population in 1891 was-in the ecclesiastical parish, 520, and in the civil parish, 545.

The parish includes the hamlet of Netherton, about 1 mile west from the village, where there are three farms and several new houses. Arthur Denis Henry Heber Reynell-Pask esq. of Netherton House, is lord of the manor of Netherton and principal landowner. The small hamlet of Middle Rocombe is 2 miles south. Combe Cellars, half a mile north, on the south bank of the river, consists of the Ferry Boat inn, with tea gardens attached, much frequented by visitors during the summer months.

Penn Inn is about 2 miles west, on the road to Newton Abbot. By an Order of the Local Government Board, dated February 25th, 1901, Penn Inn was formed into a separate parish for civil purposes, called “Milber,” and is now included in the extended Urban District of Newton Abbot.

This place is included in the United School District of Coffinswell & Haccombe, reconstituted in 1896.
