Historical Description
Combe-Martin, a very small fishing town, is situated about three miles to the east of Ilfracomb, and "dyriveth its name from the situation, being a lowe and deep valley, surrounded with very high hills (towards the sea excepted), and the addition of Martin, from Le Sieur Martin de Turon, a man of much worth, and assistant to William Duke of Normandye, when he conquered this land, of whom he had this, with other great possessions, given him." The houses extend along the dale in an irregular manner for at least a mile from the sea-shore. "The scenery of the latter, "says Dr. Maton, "is really magnificent; its more prominent parts are singularly-striking, and have the happiest accompaniments imaginable. A well broken lofty pile of rocks rises on one side of a little creek, and constitutes the termination of a ridge, deliciously wooded towards the village, and answered by hills of equal boldness opposite. From the brows of the rock hang a tuft of foliage, spared by the rude blasts of the main; the waves buffet the partial verdure at the base. The road winds down by two or three tempest-torn cottages, which a painter would consider inestimable, as they are exactly on that part of the precipice where he himself would have placed them for the advantage of his picture."
There were formerly silver mines at Combe-Martin, of "the first fynding and working of which, ther are no certain records remayninge. In the time of Edward the First they were wrought; but in the tumultuous raigne of his sonn they might chance to be forgotten, until his nephew, Edward the Third, who, in his French conquest, made good use of them; and so did Henry the Fifth: and lately in our age, in the tyme of Queen Elizabeth, there was found a new lode in the land of Richard Roberts, gentleman, first begann to be wrought by Adrian Gilbert, Esq., and after by Sir Beavis Bulmer, Knt., by whoes mynerall skill great quantetie of silver was landed and refined, of which he gave a rich and fayer cup to the Right Hon. William Earl of Bathe, whereon was engraven:
In Martin's-Combe long lay I hyd,
Obscured deprest with grosser soyle,
Debased much with mixed load,
Till Bulmer came, whoes skill and toyle
Refined me so pure and cleene,
As rycher no where els is seene;
And adding yet a farder grace,
By Fashion he did inable
Me worthy for to take a place
To serve at any prince’s table.
Combe-Martin gave the use alone,
Bulmer fining and fashion.
Anno nostrae salutis 1593.
Reginae virginis 35.
Noblissimo viro Willielmo Comiti Bartheon, Locum
Tenenti Devoniae et Oxon.
He gave me also another, with a cover, to the Hon. Sir Richard Martin, Knight, Lord Mayor of the Citie of London, to contynue to the said citie for ever. It wayeth 137 ounces fine, better than sterlinge, on which these verses are yet to be seen:
When water workes in Broaken Wharfe
At first erected weare,
And Bevis Bulmer with his art
The waters ’gan to reare,
Disperced I in earth dyd lie
Since all beginninge old,
In place called Comb, where Martin longe.
Had hid me in his molde.
I did no service on the earth,
But no man set me free,
Till Bulmer, by his skill and change,
Did frame-me this to be.
Anno nostrae Redemtionis 1593.
Reginae virginis 35.
Richarardo Martino militi; iterum majori sive, dice secunda civitatis London."
COMBMARTIN (or Combe Martin) is a parish and village, consisting of one irregular street, extending from the shore nearly a mile in length up the side of a valley, about 6 miles east from Ilfracombe station on the London and South Western railway, in the North Western division of the county, Braunton hundred and petty sessional division, Barnstaple union and county court district, rural deanery of Sherwell, archdeaconry of Barnstaple and diocese of Exeter. This was formerly a market town, and the charter is still preserved. The church of St. Peter is a building of ruddy stone in the Early English and Perpendicular styles, consisting of chancel with aisle, nave, north aisle, transepts, north and south porches and an embattled western tower of Perpendicular date, 100 feet in height, with four pinnacles, and containing a clock and 6 bells, recast by Taylor, of Oxford, in 1827: the screen separating the chancel from the nave is particularly fine and has painted panels with figures of the Apostles: there is also a parclose rood staircase: in the south aisle is a mural monument with finely carved effigy to the wife of Thomas Ivatt, ob. 1634, and there is also a well-preserved brass to William Hancock esq. dated, 1587: there are seven stained windows, two of which in the chancel were painted by the late Mrs. Tyrrell, and another contains ancient glass formerly in an old window: in the vestry is an oak chest, and the north aisle of the chancel retains portions of carved oak benches: the church was restored in 1881, at a cost of £500, and has 450 sittings. The register dates from the year 1736. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £307, with 70 acres of glebe and residence, in the gift of and held since 1842 by the Rev. Humphry William Toms M.A. of Exeter College, Oxford, and J.P. The chapel of Holy Trinity, a chapel of ease to St. Peter’s church, is an iron building, presented to the rector by Mrs. Whitehead, and erected by him in 1885 on his own land; it consists of nave and a western turret containing one bell. There are also Baptist and Wesleyan chapels with Sunday schools attached. The Free Library, opened in 1892, was taken over by the parish council in 1896, and two members of the council act as librarians. Conservative and Liberal clubs were formed in 1896. In the parish is a small umber mine, and lime burning is extensively carried on. The mines in the parish, containing lead and silver ore, have been worked from the time of Edward I. and were at times very productive. Between 1796 and 1802 9,293 tons of rich ore were shipped to South Wales, and the mines were again worked in 1813 and 1835 at great expense, but are now entirely neglected. A silver cup, 137oz. in weight, presented by Queen Elizabeth to Sir R. Martin, Lord Mayor of London, and still used at the annual inauguration of the lord mayors, bears the date of 1593, and is said to be made of metal obtained from these mines. The trustees of the late Lady Watson-Cnpley, of Sprotbrough Hall, W. Yorks, are lords of the manor and principal landowners. The soil is loam; subsoil, rock. The valley is very productive, and the cottagers supply quantities of fruit and vegetables to Lynton and Ilfracombe. The chief crops are pasture, fruit and vegetables. The area of the parish is 3,670 acres of land and 127 of foreshore; assessable value, £4,024; the population in 1891 was 1,407.
National School (boys), founded & endowed in 1716 by George Ley esq. with land now producing £45 yearly; it was rebuilt in 1820 & enlarged in 1854, for 70 boys; average attendance, 68; the old school house was sold in 1876 & the proceeds applied towards building a school for 120 girls & infants; average attendance, 128.
