Historical Description

COMPTON GIFFORD was formed into a civil parish in 1898, and comprises that portion of the ancient parish not incorporated with Plymouth in 1896: it is 1 mile north from Plymouth, in the Western division of the county, Roborough hundred, Midland Roborough petty sessional division, Plympton St. Mary union, East Stonehouse comity court district, and within the ecclesiastical parish of Emanuel, Plymouth. The area is 150 acres of land; rateable value, £2,137; the population in 1901 was 266.

Kelly's Directory of Devon (1902)

COMPTON GIFFORD, called in Domesday “Contone” and “Contona,” adjoins Plymouth on the north-east, and occupies “the crests and flanks of two roughly parallel ridges, connected by a slight plateau, and is a tithing and a civil parish, formed December 22, 1871, into an ecclesiastical parish with an addition from the civil parish of Charles, Plymouth: in 1880 the St. Andrew’s portion of the tything was added, and the parish now also includes part of Plymouth lying east of Mutley plain. The boundaries of the tything are formed by watercourses, or by the lines of ancient roads, but in no case do any of these belong to the tything. Under the provisions of a Bill framed by the Local Government Board, and confirmed by a House of Commons Committee, 10th July, 1896, it was agreed, after an appeal to the House of Lords, that the whole of Compton Gifford lying south of Higher Compton road, should become on and from 9th November, 1896, a portion of the extended borough of Plymouth; the remainder, outside the limits of the borough, amounts to about 167 acres. The nearest station is at Mutley on the South Western railway. Emmanuel church, at Mannamead, is a building of stone, in the Decorated style, consisting of chancel, nave, aisles, large transepts, vestry, organ chamber, south and west porches, and a tower: the church, begun in 1870, from the designs of Mr. Reid, architect, was extended, in 1881, at a cost of £4,000; and in 1897, the present tower was erected and dedicated at a cost of £3,500: the east window, erected by the Messrs. Pearn, is a memorial to their mother, and there are others to the Hicks, Jackson, Rendle and Jenkins families: the church will seat 900 persons. The register dates from the year 1871. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £420, with residence, in the gift of the vicar of Charles, Plymouth, and held since 1878 by the Rev. George Benton Berry B.A. of Trinity Hall, Cambridge and surrogate. A vicarage house was provided in 1884. There is a mission chapel in Lower Compton, and one in Hyde Park road, Mutley; both are attached to Emmanuel church. The Salvation Army, in 1896, acquired Cleave Villa for the purposes of a refuge and holds services there. Charities:-Capt. Robert Rawlyn, who died in 1626, gave by will certain property to the Plymouth Orphans’ Aid, one child to be chosen from Compton Gifford, and he also left 40s. a year to the poor of this place; Rebecca Shaw, widow, January 28, 1807, left the interest of certain tolls for the poor, and Sarah Hancock, January 5, 1811, the interest of £100, these two charities now produce £5 8s. 6d. annually, which sum is distributed by the vicar. In July, 1892, the late Mr. E. A. Pearn (d. 1893), conveyed to trustees certain lands for the erection of almshouses, a home for incurables and other charitable purposes. The chief landowners are Admiral Sir Michael Culme Seymour bart. G.C.B, of Wadenhoe House, Oundle, Miss Reveil, John Thomas Soltau esq. J.P. and Richard Carter Revell esq. The soil is free soil; subsoil, clay and slate, traversed east and west by bands of contemporary igneous rocks, locally known as “dunstone,” and consisting of various lavas and turfs used both for building and road mAking, in the hill north of Compton, there exists a vein of rich red jasper; the land is chiefly used for grazing. The area is 830 acres; rateable value, £1,649; the population in 1891 was 3,264 in the tithing and 4,661 in the ecclesiastical parish.
