The church-town of Cornwood adjoins the grounds; the church is a neat edifice, with a low tower. In the church-yard are some antique granite tombs, with inscriptions in rude characters. The interior contains monuments of the families of Fortescue, Bellmaine, Savery, Rogers, &c. A tablet records the virtues of the Rev. Thomas Vivian, a learned and pious divine, 46 years vicar of the parish. Here is the monument of Sir John Rogers, member of parliament for Plymouth, lineally descended from Dr. Rogers, who suffered martyrdom "for conscience sake," in the reign of Mary. An inscription perpetuates the valour of Benjamin Burrell, a captain in the army of Charles the First.

Topography of Great Britain (1829) by George Alexander Cooke

CORNWOOD is a village and scattered parish, on the borders of Dartmoor, in the valley of the Yealm, by which river it is intersected, and bounded on the north-east by the Erme, with a station 1 mile south of the village, on the South Devon section of the Great Western railway, and is 9 ½ miles north-east from Plymouth, 12 south-south-west from Tavistock and 238 from London, in the Southern division of the county, Ermington hundred, Ermington and Plympton petty sessional division, Plympton St. Mary union, East Stonehouse county court district, rural deanery of Plympton, archdeaconry of Totnes and diocese of Exeter. The townships of Lutton, Houndle, Dinaton, Torr and part of the considerable village of Ivybridge are in the parish. The church of St. Michael is an ancient building of stone, chiefly in the Perpendicular style of the 15th century, consisting of chancel, nave, aisles, transepts, south porch and an embattled western tower with pinnacles, containing a clock presented by Lady Blachford, in commemoration of her husband, in 1892, and 6 bells cast by John Pennington and Co. in 1770, except the first, which was cast at Cullompton in 1835: the church retains sedilia and a piscina and the remains of a richly-carved rood screen: the tower and chancel are older than the other portions of the building: the chancel was restored in 1867, at a considerable cost, by the late Lord Blachford, who also placed in the south transept a stained window: the communion rails are of marble and alabaster: the church was further restored subsequent to 1873, at a cost of £2,360, and affords 400 sittings. The register dates from the year 1685. The living is a vicarage, net yearly income £360, including 99 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the Bishop of Exeter, and held since 1888 by the Rev. James Terry Mundy M.A. of Exeter College, Oxford. There is a Congregational chapel at Lutton with sittings for 100. The parish lands produce £75 yearly. Blachford is the residence of the Misses Deare, who own the great tithes and the manor of Blachford. Slade, once the seat of a family of that name, and afterwards of the Coles and Saverys, is now the seat of John Duke Pode esq. M.A., J.P. and is about a mile south. Delamore is the residence of Admiral George Parker J.P. The principal landowners are Lady Blachford, Admiral G. Parker, who is lord of the manor of Cornwood, and J. D. Pode esq. lord of the manor of Fardell. The parish contains 10,283 acres of land, of which upwards of 6,000 are common and wood, extending 6 miles northwards on Dartmoor, and 30 of water; rateable value, £9,638; the population in 1891 was 1,258 in the civil and 1,104 in the ecclesiastical parish.
