Lutton hamlet is about a mile south-west. Fardell, an old farm-house, was formerly the property of the Raleigh family, through an intermarriage with the heiress of the Newtons; Wymond Raleigh, grandfather of the famous navigator, lived here and it was no doubt the birthplace of his father, and occasionally his residence (but see East Budleigh).
