Historical Description

CRUWYS MORCHARD is a scattered village and parish on the high road from Tiverton to South Molton, 6 miles west from Tiverton station on the Great Western railway, 9 north from Crediton, 15 south-east from South Molton and 16 north-north-west from Exeter, in the North Eastern division of the county, Witheridge hundred, Cullompton petty sessional division, Tiverton union and county court district, rural deanery of West Tiverton and archdeaconry and diocese of Exeter. The church of Holy Cross is an ancient building of stone in the Decorated style, consisting of chancel, nave, south aisle, south porch and an embattled western tower, with pinnacles, containing 6 bells, dating from 1721 to 1755: the church was struck by lightning in 1689, when the steeple was shattered and the bells melted; a portion of the melted metal is still kept at the rectory: there is a finely carved oak screen in excellent condition, and monuments to the Averay and Cruwys families, and to the Rev. Edmund Granger, as well as a brass to William Stone, of Bath, who left a considerable benefaction to the parish: several of the windows are stained: the western gallery was removed in 1898, and the tower arch re-opened: there are 250 sittings. The parish register dates from the year 1572. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £399, including 132 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of George James Cruwys esq. and held since 1897 by the Rev. Philip Henry Owen B.A. of Oriel College, Oxford. The charities amount to £18 yearly. By a scheme of the Charity Commissioners, approved of in 1888, the Stone charity has been absorbed into the Stone-Kelland charity, having been added to by Wm. Hy. Kelland esq. of Kelland, Lapford, whose family have owned property here since 1834 and in the adjoining parishes of Witheridge and Rackenford since 1590, when Thomazine Kelland, sister of his lineal ancestor, was married to Thomas Colleton, grandfather of the first Sir John Colleton bart. Cruwys Morchard House, the ancient seat of the Crnwys family, adjoins the church, and is now occupied by George James Cruwys esq. J.P. lord of the manor and chief landowner. A part of the churchyard was formerly the site of an old chapel, and is still the property and burial-place of the Cruwys family, to whom the manor has belonged since the reign of King John. East Ruckham belongs to Miss Mary A. Kelland. Forke belongs to Mr. Stoneman, of North Molton, and Furse to John A. Waller esq. of Pen Park, Westbury-on-Trym. Hill and Eastland, 270 acres in extent, are the property of H. Hardie esq. of Stockport and Lieut.-Col. Edward Pryce-Jones, of Caerhowel, Newtown, Mont.; other principal landowners are Richard C. Lake esq. John Lake esq. Miss Mary A. Kelland, of Barnstaple, Mr. T. C. Waller, Mr. E. Waller, William Lake esq. Mr. Thorne and William Henry Kelland esq. The soil is loam and clay. The crops are mostly oats and wheat; there is a good deal of wood. The acreage is 6,043; rateable value, £4,214 15s.; the population in 1901 was 541.

By Local Government Board Order 16,553, Thongsleigh has been added to the parish from Cheriton Fitzpaine, in Crediton Union, March 24, 1884.
