Banns registers list the names of people who intended to marry by the system of calling banns, in which the bride and groom's name were called for three weeks at church. At these callings objections could be made to a marriage. They record the bride and groom's parish of residence, which may be recorded differently in the marriage register.

Civil & Ecclesiastical Jurisdiction
Historical Description
DENBURY is an ecclesiastical parish and village, united for civil purposes with Torbryan, and is 1 mile from the Newton and Totnes high road, 3 ½ miles south-west from Newton Abbot station on the South Devon section of the Great Western railway, 6 north from Totnes and 5 east from Ashburton, in the Mid division of the county, Haytor hundred, Teignbridge petty sessional division, Newton Abbot union, Newton Abbot and Torquay county court district, rural deanery of Moreton, archdeaconry of Totnes and diocese of Exeter. The church of St. Mary is a cruciform edifice of stone, in the Early English and Perpendicular styles, consisting of a long chancel, nave, transepts, south porch and a low embattled western tower, containing a clock and 5 bells: in the chancel is a piscina, projecting at an angle and surmounted by an Early Decorated ogee arch; the drain is deep and curious: the chancel roof is relieved by carved bosses, and there is a priest’s doorway: the stained east window was presented by the rector, and there are five other stained windows: the rood, loft stairs and traces of a rood loft still exist, and a screen of the 16th century, in good condition, separates the nave from the south transept: in the north transept are remains of the rood-loft stairs: there is a tablet in memory of Major-General Thomas William Taylor C.B. who died in 1754: the font, of red sandstone, is apparently Norman: the church was repaired about 1845, at the expense of Miss Froude, and the chancel was restored and decorated in 1866, at the cost of the Rev. James H. Reibey M.A. rector. 1859—1901: there are sittings for 300 persons. In the churchyard is a very fine yew tree. The register dates from the year 1559. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £131, with residence and 21 ¼ acres of glebe, in the gift of Mrs. Reibey, and held since 1901 by the Rev. Hubert Guillum Stanley Scott M.A. of Pembroke College, Cambridge. Here is a Baptist chapel. There are charities of about £15 yearly value, arising from land left at a very remote period; and 20s. yearly, left by John Peters, of Cornworthy, in 1570, and given, to the poor. On Denbury Down are the remains of a camp. The reading and coffee room, established in 1879 by the late Rev. James Haydock Reibey, rector here 1859—1901, and the Misses Gardiner, has a library and bagatelle and reading rooms. Denbury House, the residence of Mrs. Trevenen Coode, was during the early part of the 16th century a residence of the monks of Tavistock, and a great part of the original building remains. Daniel Robert Scratton esq. of Ogwell, is lord of the manor and chief landowner. The soil is loamy; the subsoil is limp and dunstone. The chief crops are cereals and roots. The acreage and rateable value are included with Tobryan; the population, including Torbryan, in 1891 was 516, and of the ecclesiastical parish, 331.
A School Board of 5 members was formed March 29, 1875, for the Torbryan & Denbury united district; D. R. Scratton, Ogwell, Newton Abbot, clerk to the board.
Board School (mixed), erected in 1876, for 80 children; average attendance, 61.
