Great Western railway, and 4 north from Dartmouth, in the Southern division of the county, Coleridge hundred, Stanborough and Coleridge petty sessional division, Totnes union and county court district, rural deanery and archdeaconry of Totnes and diocese of Exeter. The church of St. George is an ancient building of stone, chiefly in the Perpendicular style, consisting of chancel, nave, aisles, south porch, and an embattled western tower, with pinnacles, containing a clock and 6 bells, all cast by Thomas Mears in 1802: the east window and several others are stained, and there is a good stone pulpit: there is a fair screen, crossing the church, but its-present position is more to the east than it stood originally; it still retains some colouring: the church was restored in 1883, at a cost of £600, and affords 400 sittings. The register of baptisms and burials dates from the year 1650; marriages, 1654. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £476, including 85 acres of glebe and residence, in the gift of the Earl of Mount-Edgcumbe, and held since 1853 by the Rev. the Hon. Graham Colborne M.A. of St. John’s College, Oxford, and surrogate, who resides at Hemburyfort, Honiton. The rectory house, beautifully situated on the south bank of the Dart, is now occupied by the Rev. Edward Arthur Pearse, Assoc, of King’s College, London, who has been assistant curate since 1900.

Here is a Congregational chapel, with burial ground attached, and there is a Wesleyan chapel at Capton, built in 1890. The charities amount to £42 yearly. The rector is lord of the manor. The Raleigh trustees and H. F. Brunskill esq. of Buckland Tout Saints, are the chief landowners. The soil is clayey and loamy; subsoil, loamy, with some stone. The chief crops are wheat, barley, potatoes and fruit. The area is 2,956 acres of land, 138 of tidal water, and 233 of foreshore; rateable value, £3,669; the population in 1901 was 544.
