Historical Description
DOWN ST. MARY is a parish and village, on the Road from Crediton to Torrington, one mile south-west from the Morchard Road station on the North Devon branch of the London and South Western railway, 7 north-west from Crediton and 14 north-west from Exeter, in the South Molton division of the county, North Tawton hundred, Crediton petty sessional division, union and county court district, rural deanery of Cadbury and archdeaconry and diocese of Exeter. The church of St. Mary is a building of stone, in the Norman, Decorated and Perpendicular styles, consisting of chancel, nave, north aisle, south porch and an embattled western tower, with pinnacles, formerly containing 3 bells; the tower was restored in 1897—98, when the 3 old bells were re-hung and 2 new bells added; the doorway is a good specimen of Early Norman work: the church was restored in 1878—79 and 80, at a cost of £3,000, defrayed almost entirely by the late Rev. William Tucker Arundel Radford B.A. rector here, 1843—97, and his family, a new roof fixed, north aisle rebuilt and vestry added; the ancient oak screen, which had fallen into decay, was almost entirely replaced by new work, carved by Mr. W. H. Bushell, of this village: there are some memorial windows: there are 125 sittings: in 1898 the church cross was restored and an old wayside cross given by the Rev. F. Barker, of St. Olave’s, Chagford, was erected opposite the tower door. The register dates from the year 1688. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £200, including 50 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the representatives of the late Rev. W. T. A. Radford, and held since 1897 by the Right Rev. Bishop Robert K. Kestell-Cornish D.D. of Corpus Christi College, Oxford, late Bishop of Madagascar. There is a Bible Christian chapel at Copplestone, with 150 sittings. The charities amount to £6 13s. yearly, derived from the interest on £213 18s. 1d. in Consols, left by Mr. and Mrs. B. T. Radford, and 5s. a year from a farm called “Wood Farm,” in Eggesford. At the junction of this parish with Crediton and Colebrook stands the venerable and famous Coplestone Cross, for which see Crediton. Mr. John Pope, of Exeter, owns Little Chaffcombe, but the manor of Chaffcombe (or Chettecombe) belongs to Mr. Thomas Moon (or Mohun), and the barton of Bradiford and Bartonbury to W. T. A. Radford esq. Lord Alington is lord of the manors of Down and Crook Burnell and principal landowner. The soil is loam and clay, and the subsoil is clay. The chief crops are wheat, oats, barley and roots. The area is 2,125 acres; rateable value, £2,225; the population in 1901 was 328 in the civil and 336 in the ecclesiastical parish.
By Local Government Board Order, 16,552, which came into operation March 24, 1884, South Emlett Farm was transferred from Down St. Mary to Woolfardisworthy for civil purposes.
Church Elementary School (mixed), for 83 children; average attendance, 40.
