Historical Description
DUNCHIDEOCK is a parish and small village, in a picturesque valley, 2 miles from the Plymouth road and 4 miles south-south-west from St. Thomas station, Exeter, on the Great Western railway, about 1 ½ north-east from Doddiscombsleigh station on the Exeter, reign Valley and Chagford railway, and 5 south-west from Exeter, in the North Eastern division of the county, Exminster hundred, Wonford petty sessional division, St. Thomas union, county court district of Exeter, rural deanery of Kenn, and archdeaconry and diocese of Exeter. The church of St. Michael, rebuilt about 1669, is a building in the Decorated style, consisting of chancel, nave, north aisle, porch and a tower containing 3 bells; the first is dated 1700, the second bears a legend in Old English type, and the tenor has an invocation to St. John; there is a magnificent screen, restored in 1893, some antique carved benches, and a monument to General J. S. Lawrence, sometime commander-in-chief in India, who died in 1775, and another to Aaron Baker of Bowhay esq. ob. 1683: the stained east window is a memorial to the Rev. Henry Palk, a former rector, who died in 1872; the east window of the chancel aisle is a memorial to the Pitman family, 1879; and there are two smaller ones in the chancel, which also retains a piscina: in the north wall the stairs to the rood loft still remain: the church was restored in 1875—7 and 1889, at a cost of £1,265, chiefly defrayed by Sir William M. Walrond M.P. the chancel having been previously rebuilt by the late rector; further restorations were carried out in 1894 on the oak screen and tower, the tower arch being opened out to the church and a new west window erected, at a total cost of over £300, defrayed by subscription: a list of rectors from 1262 to the present time is kept in an oak frame in the church. The register dates from the year 1538. The living is a rectory, consolidated with that of Shillingford St. George, net yearly value £254, with 70 acres of glebe and residence, in the gift of Lord Haldon, and held since 1888 by the Rev. Samuel Hastings Atkins B.A. of Hatfield Hall, Durham, who resides at Shillingford St. George. There is a charity of 45s. derived from common lands enclosed by Sir Lawrence Palk, and another charity, consisting of the interest of £150, was left in 1894 by Mrs. Palk for the combined parishes. Dunchideock House, at present occupied by Charles Fredk. Lucas esq. is a spacious mansion, pleasantly situated. Col. the Rt. Hon. Sir William Hood Walrond bart. P.C., M.P. of Bradfield, is the chief landowner. The soil is loamy, resting on red sandstone. The chief crops are wheat and barley. The area is 968 acres; rateable value, £952; the population in 1901 was 134.
