Historical Description
At Eggesford is the seat of the Hon. Newton Fellowes. This mansion, constructed of brick, was erected about the year 1718; but has been since considerably improved and enlarged. The late Mr. Richmond laid out the surrounding grounds with much elegance and taste; plantations and woods judiciously interspersed, with the river Taw, greatly contribute to enrich the present scene.
EGGESFORD is a parish on the river Taw and in Taw Vale, with a station (in Chawleigh parish) on the North Devon branch of the London and South Western railway, and is 3 miles south-west from Chulmleigh, 12 north-west from Crediton, and 193 ½ from London, in the Northern division of the county, North Tawton hundred, South Molton petty sessional division, Crediton union and county court district, rural deanery of Chulmleigh, archdeaconry of Barnstaple, and diocese of Exeter. The church of All Saints is an ancient building of stone in mixed styles, consisting of chancel, nave, north aisle, north porch, and an embattled western tower containing 3 bells: in the church are two elaborate and superb marble monuments of the 17th century, to the Chichesters, and to the families of Fellowes and Wallop, Earls of Portsmouth: the church was restored in 1867 by the Earl of Portsmouth, at a cost of £1,000, and has 150 sittings. The register of baptisms and burials dates from the year 1592; marriages, 1586. The living is a rectory, net yearly value £115, including 170 acres of glebe, of which 20 are woodland, with residence, in the gift of the Earl of Portsmouth, and held since 1900 by the Rev. William Robinson M.A. of Corpus Christi college, Cambridge. There is a charity of £30 left by the Rev. John Churchill, the interest of which is paid to the poor. The trustees are the rector, overseers and churchwardens for the time being. A very flourishing market is held at the Fox and Hounds hotel, near the railway station, on the second Wednesday in every month, with the exception of December, when it is held on the first Wednesday. Eggesford House, the seat of the Earl of Portsmouth, lord of the manor and chief landowner, in the adjoining parish of Wembworthy, has been rebuilt, but originally was erected by Edward, 1st Viscount Chichester, in the reign of James I.; in the Civil war it was garrisoned by the Royalists, but was captured by Col. Okey in December, 1645. The soil is dunland; the subsoil is stony; the chief crops are wheat, barley and oats. The area is 1,320 acres of land and 9 of water; rateable value, £713; the population in 1901 was 126.
