Historical Description
FARWAY is a parish, 4 miles south from Honiton station on the main line of the London and South Western railway and 17 east from Exeter, in the Eastern division of the county, Colyton hundred, Honiton petty sessional division, union and county court district, rural deanery of Ottery and archdeaconry and diocese of Exeter. The church of St. Michael is a building of stone in the Early English style, consisting of chancel, nave, south porch, aisles and an embattled western tower, with a turret at the south-east angle, and containing 3 bells: the north aisle belongs to and has been the burial-place of the Prideaux family, and under a circular arch in this aisle is an altar-tomb with effigy in forensic costume of Sir Edmond Prideaux bart. barrister-at-law and reader at the Inner Temple, ob. 28 March, 1628; on a ledge below is another effigy in armour, lying sideways and bearing a shield with the arms of Prideaux, the other hand grasping a sword; this figure may possibly represent Sir Peter Prideaux M.P. son and heir of Sir Edmond, ob. 1681: the title became extinct on the death of Sir Edmond Saunderson Prideaux bart. in 1875; in the church is a stone incised with a cross flory: the church was restored in 1877 at a cost of £2,000. The register of baptisms dates from the year 1567; marriages, 1574; burials, 1573. The living is a rectory, net yearly income £195, with residence and 24 acres of glebe, in the gift of Richard Marker esq. and held since 1900 by the Rev. William Edwin Remfry, of St. Aidan’s. There is a charity of £20, left by Elizabeth Cox in 1784, the interest of which is distributed in bread to the poor. A sum of £300 was given by C. G. Prideaux-Brune esq. in 1881 for the maintenance of two pensioners, each of whom receives £6 a year, Netherton Hall, the property of Col. C. R. Prideaux-Brune J.P. of the Grange, Welwyn, Herts, but now (1901) unoccupied, was built in the reign of James I. (1607) by Sir Edmond Prideaux bart. mentioned above. Richard Marker esq. of Combe, Honiton, who is lord of the manor, Col. Prddeaux-Brune, the Misses Outhwaite, of Monkton, and Sir Charles D. Cave bart. of Sidbury, are chief landowners. The soil is red clay; subsoil, marl and sand. The crops are wheat, oats and roots. The area is 2,587 acres; rateable value, £2,371; the population in 1901 was 233.
Free School, built in 1835, for 60 children, & since enlarged; average attendance, 40: it is endowed with the interest of £250, left by Hannah Atkinson, in 1797, for teaching twelve poor children to read, and the Rev. T. Putt M.A. sometime rector of Coombe Raleigh, gave £200 as a repair fund when the school was built; the school is also supported by subscriptions.
