Historical Description

FILLEIGH is a parish and village on the west bank of the small river Bray, and adjoining the road from South Molton to Barnstaple, 1 mile south-west from Filleigh station (which is in the parish) on the Somerset and Devon section of the Great Western railway, and is 3 ½ miles north-west from South Molton, 8 south-east from Barnstaple, and 202 from London, in the Northern division of the county, Braunton hundred, South Molton petty sessional division, union and county court district, rural deanery of South Molton, archdeaconry of Barnstaple and diocese of Exeter. The church of St. Paul is a plain building of stone in the Norman style, consisting of apsidal chancel, nave, south aisle and an embattled western tower, with spire, containing 6 bells: the church was remodelled in 1876—8 by Earl Fortescue at a cost of £2,800: there are several handsome monuments and stained windows to the Fortescue family, and two small brasses, about 1 foot by 4 ½ inches, both to Richard Ffortescue of Filleigh esq. ob. 30 June, 1570, who is represented in each as in full armour, bare-headed, and kneeling before a priedieu, placed on a chequered floor; the background in one instance represents a wall pierced by a two-light window, on either side of which are quartered shields of the Fortescues; the other brass appears to have been placed by his brother-in-law, Sir Barnard Drake kt. of Ashe; both have inscriptions: there are 250 sittings. The register dates from the year 1685. The living is a rectory, with East Buckland annexed, joint net yearly value £240, including 88 ½ acres of glebe here and. 28 in East Buckland, with residence, in the gift of Earl Fortescue, and held since 1894 by the Rev. Ernest George Beckwith M.A. of New College, Oxford. There is a Bible Christian chapel at Heddon. In connection with the school is a savings bank, and there is a library for the use of the villagers. Castle Hill, the seat of Earl Fortescue D.L., J.P. lord of the manor and sole landowner, is a stately edifice, standing on a finely-wooded eminence, the summit of which is crowned by some artificial ruins, built to resemble a castle; around the mansion is a well-wooded park of about 830 acres, and an avenue of trees, nearly a mile long, leads up to a triumphal arch; a building, called “The Temple,” bears the date 1772. The soil is clay; subsoil, stony clay and skillett. The chief crops are roots, oats and wheat and pasture land. The area is 2,089 acres land and 13 of water; rateable value, £2,308; the papulation in 1891 was 292 and in 1901, 319.

National School (mixed), founded by Hugh, 2nd Earl Fortescue K.G. in memory of his son, the Hon. John W. Fortescue, who died in 1859, & completed by his brother in 1862, after their father's death; in 1894 a new classroom was added, for infants, at the expense of the present Earl; the school will hold 150 children; average attendance, 80.
