Historical Description

FREMINGTON is a large parish and village on the navigable river Taw and on the direct road from Bideford to Exeter, with a station on the North Devon branch of the London and South Western railway, and is 3 miles west from Barnstaple, 42 north from Exeter and 214 from London, in the North Western division of the county, hundred of Fremington, petty sessional division of Braunton, union and county court district of Barnstaple, rural deanery and archdeaconry of Barnstaple and diocese of Exeter. This place was formerly a borough, and in the reign of Edward III. sent members to Parliament. The church of St. Peter is a building of stone of mixed styles, consisting of chancel, nave, aisles, north porch and an embattled tower on the north side, containing a clock and 6 bells, of which the 5th, a good bell, has a legend in Old English characters; the 6th, the words,”AVE MARIA,” in Lombardic letters; the 3rd and 4th are dated respectively 1702 and 1664, and the 1st and 2nd were cast in commemoration of the Jubilee of Queen Victoria: there are many monuments and four memorial windows: various alterations were effected in 1845, in the course of which the fine screen was removed, and is now lost: the church was thoroughly restored under the superintendence of the late Sir Gilbert Scott R.A. and reopened June 11th, 1867: there are 300 sittings. The register of baptisms and burials dates from the year 1602; marriages, 1708. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £400, including 96 acres of glebe, with residence, in the gift of the Rev. Thomas Poltimore Dimond-Hogg M.A. vicar of Saltney Chester, and held since 1855 by the Rev. John Tayleur Pigot M.A. of Brasenose College, Oxford, and prebendary of Exeter. There is a lectureship here, founded and endowed by Sir John Doderidge kt. Justice of the King's Bench from 1612 to 1628, with £50 yearly, payable out of the great tithes, and held since 1879 by the Rev. William Seaton, rector of Ashford. There is a Congregational chapel at Dickington and a Wesleyan chapel at Fremington. The charities amount to £75 yearly. Here is a pottery for the manufacture of coarse ware and drain pipes, and potters’ clay, which is dug here, is a considerable article of export. Fremington House is the seat of Miss Arundell Yeo, the lady of the manor, lay impropriator and chief landowner. The soil is clayey; subsoil, rock. The chief crops are wheat and pasture. The area is 6,133 acres of land, 4 of water, 152 of tidal water and 747 of foreshore; rateable value, £6,500; the population in 1901 was 1,182.

Police Station, Edward John Crago, constable Divine service is conducted in the schoolroom on Sunday afternoons by the Rev. Wm. Seaton, rector of Ashford.

A portion of the parish is a contributory to Horwood & Newton Tracey United School Board district, sending 2 members.
