The church of SS. Mary and Gregory is a building of stone in the Perpendicular style, consisting of chancel, nave, aisles, south porch and an embattled western tower with pinnacles 72 feet in height, containing 5 large fine-toned bells, of which the first, placed in the tower by subscription in 1887, is inscribed “in honore regni Victories I.;” the second bears the names “Micael” and “Gabriel;” the third has the legend, “Sancte Michael, ora pro nobis;” the third is dated 1684, and the tenor, inscribed “IU: Abbott: ne: pigres: 1656,” weighs 17 cwt.; on the south porch is a Sun.-dial: the bench ends are carved with the double rose crowned of Henry VII. a single feather with label for Henry, Prince of Wales; a stag’s head impaled with a crosier for the Abbey of Hartland, and various figures and emblems: the interior has been partially restored at a cost of £500, including the organ, erected in 1876: there are 203 sittings. The register dates from the year 1556. The living is a vicarage, net yearly value £127, with residence, and including 65 acres of glebe, in the gift of Lord Clinton, and held since 1893 by the Rev. Edward John Jeffery M.A. of Ayerst Hall, Cambridge. The tithes, valued at £360, are held by Col. Martyn. Here is a chapel for Bible Christians, built in 1852, and a Baptist chapel, built in 1829. The Poor's Land charity produces £10 yearly. A priory of Austin Canons was founded here by Sir Robert Beauchamp, in the year 1220, and colonised from Hartland, and dedicated to SS. Mary, Edmond and Gregory; at the Dissolution there were six canons and the revenues were estimated at £127; some portions of the building, which adjoin the church, still remain, including a gable with three lofty lancets; the last prior was probably John Sturgin, buried at Monkleigh, 3 Nov. 1560; the estate is now the property of Lord Clinton. Horwood Barton is owned by Mr. John Norman and Ash Farm by Messrs. John and Samuel Fisher. Lord Clinton, who is lord of the manor, Mrs. Pulman, the Rev. Hubert G. de C. Stevens-Guille M.A. of Little Torrington, Mrs. Cummings, and the Hon. Mark George Kerr Rolle are the chief landowners. The soil is clay; subsoil, stone. The crops are the usual cereals. The area is 3,661 acres of land and 8 of water; rateable value, £2,407; the population in 1901 was 388 in the civil and 488 in the ecclesiastical parish in 1891.

By Local Government Board Order, 14,830, which came into operation March 25, 1885, Eastcott, Bower and Muddy Pill were transferred to Bulkworthy, and by Order 14,831, at the same date Great Cleave, Little Cleave and Dovies were added to Newton St. Petrock, in Bideford union, and by the Divided Parishes Act, 1882, Milford has been transferred to Buckland Brewer, for civil purposes.

Church of England School, Frithelstock Stone (mixed), erected at a cost of £420 by voluntary subscription in 1873, for 80 children; average attendance, 52; the management is vested in the hands of a committee of seven persons, the vicar being chairman.
