Croyde History

CROYDE is a hamlet, 1 mile south-west, and from its pleasant situation is now much frequented as a health resort and for sea-bathing, and a number of lodging houses have consequently been built. The chapel of St. Mary Magdalen, erected in 1874, at a cost of £500, is a plain building of stone, consisting of chancel and nave, with an attached schoolroom: there are 150 sittings: divine service is held here every Sunday by the rector of Georgeham. The Baptist chapel, erected in 1882, affords sittings for 150 persons, and has a Sunday school and burial ground attached. A rocket life-saving apparatus is kept here, in connection with which there is telephonic communication to Ilfracombe and other places on the coast.
